The COP29 Presidency co-hosted a flagship climate dialogue on sea level fluctuations and unequal consequences with the Commonwealth Secretariat at Marlborough House in London. Addressing the event, Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder of IDEA, emphasized the urgent need to protect the Caspian Sea, highlighting that protecting nature means protecting humanity. Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President and Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Climate Issues, called for global solidarity for the Caspian Sea and highlight Azerbaijan cooperation with UNEP and other organisations and countries to combat the Caspian Sea’s decline. He also reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to supporting Small Island States, which face existential threats from rising seas. The event brought together the COP29 Presidency with leaders from the Commonwealth and international NGOs to champion climate solidarity and practical action ahead of COP30. Azerbaijan continues to stand for climate action, trust, and global cooperation—protecting our seas, islands, and shared future. #COP29 #COP29Azerbaijan

❓ As the world prepares for COP30 in Belém, our new analysis raises a crucial question: Are UN climate talks still a space for ambitious climate action, or have they become a platform for corporate greenwashing? In collaboration with InfluenceMap, we examined 466 companies and industry associations that attended COP28 in Dubai and/or COP29 in Baku. We found that: ➡️ 88% have not expressed clear support for the Paris Agreement since 2024. ➡️ More than half of the companies actively communicating and lobbying on energy transition oppose key policies required to achieve it. ➡️ On deforestation and land-use policy, only 11% show active engagement, and most do not support stronger regulation. This growing gap between corporate climate rhetoric and real policy engagement highlights an urgent need for stronger oversight of business participation at COPs. 🔗 Check our analysis here: https://anticorru.pt/3eV

As #COP30 approaches, our latest analysis asks a difficult but essential question: are UN climate summits becoming platforms for genuine climate action, or industry misinformation and undue influence? The data shows a stark reality: 88% of companies attending recent UN climate talks have not clearly supported the Paris Agreement since early 2024, while 73% of companies communicating about the energy transition hold positions that do not support energy transition policies or remain ambiguous. This means that some companies attending COPs publicly support climate goals, yet resist the specific actions needed to achieve them. Have a look at the analysis we did with InfluenceMap! For COPs to drive real climate action, there should be no space for those who lobby against its goals: we urgently need an accountability framework for business participation. The credibility of global climate negotiations depends on it. There are steps to be taken by the UN Climate Change and Simon Stiell that can enhance accountability, notably full disclosure of institutional affiliations and financial ties for all accredited participants. And there is space for leadership from the #COP30 Presidency to be exemplary on these topics. There has been positive developments like the #GES and a transparency portal but clear signals need to be sent that accountability, ethics and integrity are a top priority. 🔗 Read our analysis here: https://lnkd.in/ekPAfDHA Laurence Tubiana Jennifer Morgan Ana Toni Tulio Andrade Alice de Moraes Amorim Vogas Kumi Naidoo Renato Morgado Johanna Nublat

Developing countries should certainly scale up climate ambition - as they are doing - in line with their growing capabilities. But should developed countries ask them to do so, on a perception of their growing responsibilities? This commentary argues that if developed countries had provided adequate, timely, & appropriate finance, developing countries would already be on a lower carbon trajectory. Their increasing emissions are thus at least partly attributable to developed countries. Instead of calling for more contributions from the global South and sidestepping their unmet historical obligations, developed countries should work to rebuild trust and offer clearer support, in line with needs. 🌍 COP Insights #2 30 Years of Climate Negotiations: Why Each COP Chose Its City Over nearly three decades, the UN Climate Change Conferences (COPs) have traveled across continents — from Berlin to Kyoto, from Paris to Dubai. Each host city wasn’t chosen by chance. Every location reflects how global climate governance evolved from local diplomacy to planetary collaboration. 🌎 1990s–2000s|Building the Institutional Foundation 🇩🇪 Berlin (COP1, 1995) — The birthplace of global climate diplomacy. Germany set the tone for credible and science-based negotiations. 🇯🇵 Kyoto (COP3, 1997) — Tradition meets technology. Japan’s cultural capital represented Asia’s industrial responsibility, giving birth to the first legally binding climate treaty. 🇲🇦 Marrakech (COP7, 2001) — Bridging continents. Hosting in North Africa signaled focus on developing nations and adaptation finance. 🇨🇦 Montreal (COP11, 2005) — Science meets governance. As home to the Montreal Protocol, it symbolized cross-treaty cooperation. 🇮🇩 Bali (COP13, 2007) — An island on the frontline. Indonesia highlighted the vulnerability of coastal and island states. 🌍 2010s|From Consensus to Collective Action 🇩🇰 Copenhagen (COP15, 2009) — Symbol of expectation. The Danish capital mirrored hopes for a grand deal — though consensus fell short. 🇲🇽 Cancun (COP16, 2010) — Rebuilding trust. Mexico restored inclusiveness and momentum after Copenhagen. 🇫🇷 Paris (COP21, 2015) — The heart of diplomacy. France’s capital became synonymous with unity, birthing the historic Paris Agreement and the 1.5°C goal. 🇵🇱 Katowice (COP24, 2018) — A coal city transforming. Poland’s industrial hub embodied the reality of transitioning toward renewables. 🌏 2020s|Decade of Action and Transition 🇬🇧 Glasgow (COP26, 2021) — Industrial heritage, green future. The UK showcased clean energy leadership and reaffirmed net-zero pledges. 🇪🇬 Sharm El-Sheikh (COP27, 2022) — Climate justice on African soil. Egypt hosted dialogues on equity and the Loss & Damage Fund. 🇸🇦 Dubai (COP28, 2023) — Transformation in the oil heartland. The UAE’s hosting proved even fossil-fuel economies must lead the transition. Baku (COP29, 2024) — From energy exporter to climate financier. Azerbaijan bridges East and West, shaping new climate-finance frameworks. 🇧🇷 Belém, Brazil (COP30, 2025) — Returning to nature’s frontier. At the edge of the Amazon, COP30 will mark a new decade of climate action. 🔍 Reflection Each host city has been more than a backdrop — a mirror of the world’s climate journey, from Europe’s negotiation tables to Africa’s and Latin America’s vulnerable coasts, and now, to the lungs of our planet — the Amazon. Every COP reminds us that climate action is both global and local, and every city tells a story of progress, responsibility, and hope. 🌱 💼 Follow EcoStrategy (益珂環能) for insights on ESG, carbon markets, and sustainability innovation. 🔗 Website: https://strategyesg.com/

This is a important post about the upcoming COP30 in Brazil and the call for tangible action. President Lula is right: this must be the "COP of Truth." But where will this "truth" ultimately be tested? In my view as a tax lawyer working at the intersection of Law and ESG, it will be measured in two key areas far from the podium: 1. In Corporate Boardrooms: Through defensible and verifiable corporate strategies. The lofty goals of NDCs must be translated into concrete business models, investment plans, and risk management frameworks. 2. In National Tax Codes: Via the fast advancement of Green Taxation. This is the ultimate tool to make climate action real for the private sector. We will see robust carbon markets, tax benefits for genuine green investments, and severe penalties for greenwashing. The success of COP30 won't just be in the agreements signed; it will be in the corporate tax returns and legal disclosures that follow. Companies that understand this now, and integrate ESG as a core compliance and strategic issue, will be the ones leading the next decade. What's your take? How do you see the private sector's role in this "implementation decade"? #COP30 #GreenTaxation #ESG #ClimateAction #TaxLaw #SustainableBusiness #CorporateStrategy
As President Lula said in his #GeneralAssembly speech, COP30 Brazil will be the COP of truth: the time to prove the seriousness of our commitments and accelerate climate action. It is essential that countries to deliver their updates #NDCs. Far from mere climate targets, they represent the vision of our shared future. Without them, we will be walking blindly toward the abyss. President Lula also reinforced the central role of multilateralism and international cooperation. There are no solutions to the crises we face unless we act together and collectively. And we need everyone to turn the next decade into a milestone of implementation. The world owes much to the regime created by the Climate Convention, but it is now necessary to bring the fight against climate change to the heart of the United Nations and to other foruns, so that it receives the attention it deserves. #climatechange #COP30 #mutiraoCOP30
