The spark that may ignite HL7 Ireland was lit on Monday in Dublin. Grahame Grieve flew in all the way from Australia to talk about FHIR and to explain how a local HL7 affiliate could help guide FHIR adoption. The meeting brought together a mix of academics, vendors, consultants and healthcare professionals. Discussion after the event raised a lot of frustrations with the healthcare system in Ireland and highlighted the need for greater FHIR adoption and a patient-centric approach to data. The lack of an Irish HL7 affiliate is problematic and more than a little embarrassing. It means no one is championing interoperability and FHIR in the country. No one is putting the patient first. With EHDS on the horizon and work being done all across Europe to deliver common Implementation Guides, Ireland needs to get its act together. HL7 Ireland is the start. Decisions are made by those who show up. Thanks to everyone who braved the torrential downpours on Monday afternoon and took the time to meet in Dublin. If you want to get involved, reach out to me, Martin Curley or Maxine Radcliffe. There’s a lot of work to do.
Great to read about this coming together! As chair of an Health Level Seven International affiliate I would appreciate to see the reformation of HL7 Ireland 🇮🇪. The work to reach it is worth it.
It was great to meet you Darren! I share your hope that HL7 Ireland will materialize from these discussions.
As a member of the HL7 International Affiliate Engagement Committee, I look forward to helping to progress the formation of HL7 Ireland.
As our Conor (2nd from left 👍) later clarified to Grahame, the iEHR Ireland FHIR profile has been officially certified by GPIT (the certification authority jointly established by ICGP, HSE, and DoH) and approved for deployment within the Irish healthcare system. In parallel, we are actively progressing efforts to establish the Ireland Affiliate program.
Thanks Darren Devitt for posting and a great talk. It was a real pleasure to host this special FHIR meeting at the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) as a key part of Maynooth University research week. Grahame Grieve 's visit and talk was a great catalyst to make progress. Maxine Radcliffe showed FHIR already at work in Ireland and John Kildea 's demo was the icing on top of the open source cake. Go Darren Devitt and team, #Ireland, #Interoperability, #Patient !
What a powerful moment for Ireland’s digital health future. It takes vision and courage to light that first spark, and this gathering shows both. The energy around FHIR and interoperability is growing fast across Europe, and it’s inspiring to see Ireland step forward to make patient-centered data exchange a reality. Congratulations to everyone who showed up and started what could become a defining chapter for Irish healthcare.
Great stuff! Although we are far away, New Zealand and Ireland are both magical places with a lot of health system and health tech characteristics in common. As Chair of HL7NZ, I welcome your efforts to form an HL7 affiliate, will do whatever I can to help, and look forward to working with you!
Great presentations and great discussions! Thanks for organizing Darren Devitt Martin Curley Maxine Radcliffe
