🔥 Fire carbon emissions fall sharply in South America in 2025 🚨 A notable reduction in emissions from fires marks a hopeful shift after record-breaking losses in 2024. During the 2025 fire season, Southern Hemisphere South America has recorded lower fire carbon emissions than in recent years - a spark of hope for forest ecosystems that store vast amounts of carbon, and for the communities and species that depend on them. The Amazon Fire Dashboard differentiates fire carbon emissions from natural fires in savannas and grasslands, deforestation fires, and forest fires (Andela et al., Science Advances). Human-caused forest fires are projected to intensify with rising temperatures and prolonged droughts - and were the main cause of record carbon losses in 2024 during extreme regional drought. This year’s reduction reflects a decline in deforestation-related fires and a return to more typical climatic conditions. At COP30, let’s focus on what works. We need both emissions reductions and ecosystem conservation - and high-integrity carbon markets can provide the funding to make it happen. 🌍 Emissions reductions and ecosystem conservation go hand in hand. https://lnkd.in/eU2pRkRk https://lnkd.in/eDeNje-z #SouthAmerica #Wildfires #COP30 #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAction BeZero Carbon

Most people don’t get to see what’s happening beneath mangroves 👇 Beneath the surface, they become nurseries for life, sheltering thousands of juvenile fish, crabs, and countless marine species during their most vulnerable stage of life In fact, 2/3 of all tropical fish are born in mangroves 🐠 Mangroves store up to five times more carbon than terrestrial forests, protect coasts, and support millions of livelihoods Yet they’re disappearing fast As we head toward COP30 Brazil, protecting blue carbon ecosystems must be built into all 151 coastal nations’ NDCs and climate strategies 🌎 #BlueCarbon #Mangroves #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAction #COP30

In this article authored by our Co-President Brendan Toh, the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF) is presented as a bold departure from conventional, project-based conservation finance. Unlike carbon offsets, TFFF rewards countries for keeping their forests intact through long-term, rule-based payments, and is touted as a game-changer for global forest protection. With COP30 on the horizon, does this structural approach mark a true turning point in the fight against deforestation? Can dependable, large-scale climate finance finally deliver lasting benefits for both people and nature? #COP30 #ClimateFinance #ClimateAction #TFFF #Forests #NatureBasedSolutions

🌱💧 Why are freshwater wetlands so important for climate action? Wetlands are nature’s carbon storage powerhouses. While they occupy just a small percentage of the Earth’s land surface, they store vast amounts of carbon, playing a huge role in the global carbon cycle. Despite their power, and significance for wildlife and people, they have been largely overlooked by the global community, particularly when it comes to climate commitments. As a result of this lack of attention and protection, they are disappearing at rapid rates. Concerningly, as they are drained and degraded, they release massive amounts of greenhouse gases – exacerbating the climate crisis. The upcoming #COP30 is an opportunity to change course and put a spotlight on wetlands. It’s time for ambitious political action to protect and restore these vital ecosystems. Countdown to COP30: The climate crisis is not a distant threat, it’s already reshaping our forests, coasts, and biodiversity. As the world prepares for COP30, the Regional Centre of Excellence continues to support countries in Eastern and Southern Africa to respond to the growing impacts of climate change on nature and people. Seascapes: Rising sea levels and ocean warming are threatening coastal ecosystems and livelihoods. Through geospatial tools, RCoE_ESA supports coastal monitoring and sustainable marine resource management. Forests: Deforestation and shifting rainfall patterns are altering forest health and carbon storage. RCoE works with the ESA region to map forest cover, assess change, and strengthen restoration efforts. Biodiversity: Changing temperatures and land use are disrupting habitats and species distribution. RCoE_ESA harmonises biodiversity data on our Geoportal to guide evidence-based conservation and policy action. The Hidden Methane Threat Beneath U.S. National Parks Beneath the trails and forests of America’s national parks, thousands of abandoned oil and gas wells quietly leak danger. It’s estimated there are around 2,500 inactive wells on Park Service lands — including 93 that are orphaned. Of these, about 70 are actively leaking methane, a greenhouse gas 82× more potent than CO₂. Until recently, just one person at the National Park Service was responsible for addressing them. These wells also release benzene, a chemical linked to blood cancers, while oil and brine seep into aquifers that supply drinking water. What looks like pristine wilderness often hides a legacy of pollution. Cleaning up orphaned wells isn’t just about the past — it’s about protecting our climate, water, and public health today. https://bit.ly/47pewuk #Methane #ClimateAction #NationalParks #EnergyTransition #Nature #COP30 Anthony Hobley COP30 Brazil Global Methane Hub Katharine Hayhoe Reid Calhoon Carl Pope Kevin Brooks Christiana Figueres Christian Dannecker We Don't Have Time The Pew Charitable Trusts Canadian Institute of Forestry Rocky Mountain Section Yale Program on Climate Change Communication

Climate change is eroding one of our most trusted allies: forests. A recent study in Australia found that over the past ~25 years, certain forests have shifted from being a net carbon sink to a carbon source. The reason: trees are dying faster than new ones can grow, largely because of climate change impacts such as increased droughts, extreme heat and cyclone damage - pushing ecosystems past their resilience thresholds. In other words, climate change is killing forests in Australia faster than they can recover. New trees don't grow in high enough numbers or fast enough rates to offset the carbon emitted by the increase of dying and decomposing biomass. This is a huge problem because many commitments to mitigate climate change rely on nature based solutions. Other tropical forests are at risk of the same happening to them. The assumption that forests will reliably absorb our emissions therefore may no longer hold true - at least not everywhere. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't used nature-based solutions though, on the contrary: we need to protect them more, but we need to understand the damage that's being done to them is likely to generate additional, unforeseen emissions unless we can reverse the trend. Forests are a floodgate, and they're at risk of cracking under the climate pressure - that pressure needs to be alleviated fast, and forests must be protected against it. 💡Why it matters for business and climate strategy Forests have been a critical part of global carbon-budget thinking. For organisations investing in nature-based solutions, this research signals the need for robust risk assessment and scenario planning. The urgency of emissions reductions at source has never been greater. Even if we conserve and restore forests, we must also tackle the root cause: human driven greenhouse-gas emissions. What organisations can do: - Review your organisation’s reliance on forest-based carbon-removal assumptions: are they still valid under emerging science? - Strengthen partnerships with credible forestry & ecosystem-services programs that track health, mortality, regrowth, and resilience - not just hectares planted. - Accelerate decarbonisation: we cannot afford to kick the can down the road. - Go beyond mitigating emissions - protect forests because it's needed for world security, not just because they can capture carbon. What membership organisations can do: - Help your members set science-based targets for nature and decarbonisation - Support biodiversity and conservation projects - Help members monitor and drastically reduce their GHG emissions to stay in line with the global carbon budget. #ClimateAction #Forests #Carbon #Sustainability #NatureBasedSolutions #Australia https://lnkd.in/g23Hsvj4
