What if the cost of geothermal energy could be slashed to the same level as solar? Fifteen years ago, solar power was considered too expensive to compete with conventional energy. Today, it’s a global powerhouse. Geothermal could follow the same path and the future of clean, baseload energy may be closer than we think. Speaking in numbers, solar power was once priced at 400 USD/MWh, while the average electricity price was around 50 USD/MWh, nearly nine times higher. Fast forward, and solar now competes at 20-30 USD/MWh. Today, geothermal energy finds itself at a similar crossroads. International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that geothermal electricity costs could drop from 250 USD/MWh to just 50 USD/MWh by 2035. For reference, the average electricity price today is around 50-100 USD/MWh, depending on the region. So, bringing geothermal costs down to 50 USD/MWh would not only make it highly competitive, it could also make it one of the most affordable sources of baseload, always-on clean energy. To make this vision a reality, we must: 🔸 Streamline permitting processes to speed up project timelines and attract more investment. 🔸 Leverage the 80% technology overlap with the oil & gas industry to scale quickly. 🔸 Keep innovating - from better drilling techniques to evolving business models that increase scalability. Global renewable energy capacity will more than double by 2030. The increase equals the total power generation of China, the EU, and Japan combined. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) Renewables 2025 report, solar PV will drive around 80% of this growth, followed by wind, hydro, bioenergy and geothermal. Despite policy shifts in the US and China, momentum remains strong in regions like India, Europe and Southeast Asia.
