I’m proud to share another report by my brilliant colleagues, developed in close collaboration with the Adelaide University (AU). Universities are under growing pressure to demonstrate their contribution to the economy-not just nationally, but locally. Around the world, governments are trying to identify the research areas that matter most to their nations and regions. This report explores how Adelaide University’s research strengths align with South Australia’s economic priorities. It examines how the university can position itself as an engine for innovation, productivity, and growth across five Signature Research Themes, using indicators such as business R&D expenditure, industry co-authored publications, and startup activity. This is also one of key themes with 4th Generation University - understanding the role of university as an orchestrator within the local ecosystem.

‼️ The NZ Government has given further updates on the upcoming research funding reform. The decision making process will be left to a new single independent board and this new streamlined funding process will be centred around four pillars: ✅ Economy ✅ Advanced technology ✅ Environment ✅ Health and Society Some of the contestable funds such as Endeavour and the Marsden Fund are expected to transition to the new funding system in 2026 and the HRC should follow later. 📅 Please note a webinar addressing the funding system changes will be held Wednesday 15 October, 12pm NZ time. Most physicists would have no expectation that a deeper knowledge of gravitational waves will have any practical usage in the foreseeable future. What, then, will be the economic impact of building a gravitational-wave detector hundreds of metres underground in some abandoned mines? What will be the societal impact of several kilometres of lasers and mirrors? Such questions are strategically important for the future of fundamental science, which is increasingly often big science. Learn more about two books that tackle big science's socio-economic impacts head on, though with quite different approaches. 🌍 New Publication: Measuring Regional Economic Transformation in Europe Excited to share the joint paper with Andrea Conte – “Measuring regional economic transformation: Which European regions are leading the competitiveness and sustainability challenge?”, just published in Global Challenges & Regional Science. 🔹 What we ask: How are European regions transforming their economies to stay competitive and move towards sustainability? 🔹 What we propose: We introduce a novel framework – the Annual Competitiveness And Sustainability (ACAS) Index – to measure economic transformation across European regions (2009-2022). Economic transformation, as we define it, combines structural change (shifts across sectors) and industrial transition (upgrading within sectors). 🔹 What we find: Our analysis reveals: ✅ Europe’s transformation is highly heterogenous across regions and sectors. ✅ Human and physical capital, innovation capacity, and demographics are key drivers of this transition. ✅ Regions with strong R&D intensity and skilled labour alignment lead in competitiveness and sustainability. ✅ Lagging regions are catching up through physical capital investment and sectoral modernisation. ✅ Economic progress in neighbouring regions fosters positive spillovers – transformation is contagious. 🔹 Why it matters: As Europe pursues the green and digital twin transitions, understanding where and how economic transformation happens is essential. Our findings call for place-sensitive and networked policy approaches that balance competitiveness, sustainability, and cohesion. Earlier this month, we released a new report in collaboration with Adelaide University in South Australia. As the state of South Australia is undergoing an ambitious economic reform aimed at boosting productivity through research and innovation, the report examines how Adelaide University can play a pivotal role by aligning its research activities with the state’s economic focus. I believe this project has been a significant step forward in developing new ways to assess the alignment between research and regional economic activity. One key innovation was linking granular data on regional economic specialisation with our research specialisation data, resulting in a simple yet powerful diagnostic tool, which can be replicated across different organisations and geographies. Working on this report has been a fantastic experience and I want to extend my thanks to Anton Middelberg and his team for this joint effort and for presenting us with such a stimulating challenge. BKR Capital’s Lise Birikundavyi attended Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP)’s conference ‘Canada’s Next Economic Transformation: Industrial Policy in Tumultuous Times’, in Ottawa on September 16th. As part of the panel ‘Building for the future: does Canada need a new approach to industrial policy?’, Lise shared her expert opinions on how industrial policy can help Canada address today's pressing challenges with other impressive thought leaders on the panel - Jesse McCormick ICD.D and Christopher Ragan. She emphasized that full economic participation is essential to the framework of any industrial policy: while we invest in new technologies and attract talent from all over the world, we should also focus on optimizing the incredible diversity of skills we already have in Canada. By removing barriers across gender, race, and region, we can ensure that every community can participates in our country’s growth. In other words, our lowest-hanging fruit for boosting productivity is fully leveraging the talent that’s already here. Steve Lafleur skillfully moderated the discussion to elicit an insightful conversation and answers to some thought-provoking questions. The conference saw some of the sharpest minds from diverse fields-business leaders, researchers, academicians and policy makers-opine on collaboration between Government plans and private sector capacity to help drive Canada’s economic transformation. Faced with disruptions both simultaneous and sequential in nature, with little or no time for recovery, such dialogues around Canada’s industrial policy are imperative. #BKRCapital #IRPP
