European Parliament’s Post

Young Europeans are embracing generative AI.   The European Parliament’s latest youth survey found that 57% of respondents aged 16-30 had used AI-based applications for text, images or video over the past year. Young people in Romania were the most curious about this emerging technology, with 66% trying it out, while their Cypriot counterparts were the most cautious, with 44%.   The law also aims to support innovation and requires national authorities to provide companies with a testing environment that simulates conditions close to the real world. This is so start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises may have opportunities to develop and train AI models before their release to the public.   These rules categorise artificial intelligence by the level of risk and set obligations for both providers and users. Generative AI models such as ChatGPT, which are algorithms that have been trained to create new content, are not considered high-risk, but they will have to comply with transparency requirements and EU copyright law.   AI systems deemed to be a threat to people, such as social scoring and real-time facial recognition, are classified as having unacceptable risks and are banned under the AI act, while AI systems that negatively affect safety or fundamental rights will be considered high-risk and will be assessed before being put on the market, and throughout their lifecycle.   The law also aims to support innovation requires that national authorities provide companies with a testing environment that simulates conditions close to the real world. This is so start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises may have opportunities to develop and train AI models before their release to the public.   Read more about the EU’s efforts to protect you in the age of AI: https://europa.eu/!d3hnYX

  • A map with the results of the Youth Eurobarometer, asking young people if they have used generative AI applications in the past year: Romanian youth lead the way with 66% experimenting with AI, while Cypriot youth remain the most cautious at 44%.

AI is a very powerful tool, that's why we as users need to learn how to leverage it to make positive impact!

According to the survey conducted by the European Parliament, 57% of young Europeans aged 16 to 30 have engaged with AI-based applications for text, image, or video creation in the past year. This statistic not only highlights the growing integration of generative AI in daily life but also underscores a significant shift in how young people across Europe are interacting with and shaping technology. In Romania, for instance, a striking 66% of the youth have experimented with these technologies, indicating a robust curiosity and an eagerness to explore new digital frontiers. Contrastingly, young Cypriots exhibit more caution, with only 44% delving into AI tools, reflecting diverse levels of acceptance and trust across the continent. This trend suggests that while generative AI continues to gain traction among Europe’s youth, its adoption is nuanced, influenced by varying cultural and national perspectives on technology and innovation.

How sad. As a teaching staff I have been getting e-mails of absence with the ChatGPT line of "sure here is an email for XYZ" included, showing that the new batch on students might be relying too much on AI. Even in class I've gotten "oh but ChatGPT explained it in a different way" which even in my sparing use I've experienced usually comes with wrong explanations, incorrect interpretations and sometimes even basic math errors. Losing basic communication skills like writing an e-mail or being able to search for alternative (and correct) explanations yourself is very concerning in academia, but I might be biased as a communication researcher.

Very insightful posting. The challenge to come from my perspective will now be to better understand which tools are being used, develop EU-based technologies/ tools and ensure sufficient upskilling/ reskilling for effective AI use.
