Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a promising technique for membrane fabrication and modification. However, to make it scalable and compatible with atmospheric spatial roll-to-roll ALD systems, we need to limit the number of cycles required. In our recent work from Functional Coating Group led by Jeffrey Elam at Argonne National Laboratory, we propose an simple activation step prior to ALD to render polymeric membranes hydrophilic for superior crude oil emulsion separation with >50% increase in water permeance. Our approach reduces the requirement of ALD cycles by >100x compared to what has been used previously to achieve similar hydrophilicity in PVDF membranes.
