This project was aimed at creating a vital source of fodder and shelter for local cattle, benefiting both the environment and the community. The planting was guided by Padma Shri- Shri Sundaram Verma’s dryland agroforestry technique, which is designed for sustainable growth in arid regions. Built on farmers’ lands, these wells strengthen a sense of ownership, reduce water stress and support livelihoods. With a secure access to water, Mayavati is now able to grow a range of vegetables and staple crops—enough to feed her family and sell the surplus in local markets. RUBBER FARMING IS TRANSFORMING TRIBAL COMMUNITIES IN GAJAPATI, ODISHA, FROM POVERTY TO PROSPERITY! In Odisha’s Gajapati district, rubber cultivation has transformed the lives of tribal farmers, turning once poverty-stricken communities into prosperous ones. Initiated by the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) in collaboration with the Rubber Board, rubber farming began as an experimental project 25 years ago. Starting with just 6,400 saplings on 15 hectares, it has now expanded to over 400 hectares across more than 20 villages. The process involves extracting latex from mature rubber trees, which begins after eight years of growth. The latex is processed into usable rubber, offering farmers a sustainable income. Today, families earn up to Rs 1 lakh annually from rubber cultivation, improving their livelihoods, children’s education, and overall quality of life. We’re proud to collaborate with WASSAN NGO to promote sustainable cashew cultivation in Andhra Pradesh. Through this initiative, we aim to empower local farmers with improved technologies, training, and market access — creating livelihoods while nurturing the land. Field Visit & Farmers’ Interaction at Makardhokra, Deori On 29th September 2025, a field visit and farmers’ interaction meeting was organized at Makardhokra village, Gram Panchayat Shirpur, Tehsil Deori, Maharashtra under the High Impact Mega Watershed Project. The maiden field visit of Shri Nand Kumar (IAS Officer) (Director General, Mission MGNREGA, Government of Maharashtra) was jointly facilitated by Bharat Rural Livelihoods Foundation (BRLF) and Indian Grameen Services. The event brought together Sarpanch, Deputy Sarpanch, farmers, community representatives, and project staff to discuss rural development, sustainable agriculture, and livelihood enhancement. Shri Kumar engaged directly with farmers, addressing their queries and sharing inspiring success stories – including Khomarpada village, where the collective village income rose from ₹35 lakh in 2016 to ₹2.35 crore in 2025. This example highlighted the transformational potential of community-driven development. Ms. Chetna Latkar, Livelihood Expert, BRLF shared insights on key livelihood interventions to focus such as: 1. Agriculture development & soil-water conservation 2. Cattle sheds & organic farming 3. Agro-processing & women-led employment opportunities Farmers were also informed about government schemes offering up to 90% subsidy for setting up agro-processing units – creating pathways for value addition and self-reliance. The meeting concluded with a collective resolution to transform Makardhokra into a green, self-reliant, and exemplary ‘Lakhpati Gaon’.
