📢 On the 3rd of October, EAT and The Lancet Group Commission released an update to its landmark Planetary Health Diet report, and their message is clear: For a healthy, sustainable and just diet, we need to cut meat consumption and shift to mostly plant-based diets. This means changing to food systems that enable high animal welfare and the protection of people and planet. 🌍 FOUR PAWS calls for a global reduction in meat consumption by half. To achieve this, Global North countries need to uphold their responsibility and cut meat consumption by more than 70%. 🍽️ Based on FAO data, in 2023 alone, 85.4 billion animals were slaughtered for food globally. According to the report, adopting a diet that fits the planetary health recommendations would mean livestock numbers decline. That’s fewer animals cruelly kept, transported, and killed. While the EAT-Lancet report faces backlash from the meat industry and its supporters, the facts remain: ⚠️ Meat overconsumption harms public health, fueling diabetes, higher cholesterol levels, coronary heart disease and even cancer. 🥩 Meat production and sales remain unregulated, with cheap prices masking the true environmental and health costs. 🌿 ️Reducing meat production and consumption is a key solution to multiple health, ecological and social crises we are facing. At FOUR PAWS, we welcome this report’s call for a more just and sustainable food system – one that values animal welfare, healthy communities, and a thriving planet. 🌱 We highlight these urgent issues each year with Meat Exhaustion Day, showing how quickly the annual recommended meat limit is surpassed, usually by June. This target can be achieved, even if some do not want to change their diets, although it takes three vegans to compensate for each refusenik.
