An advanced form of LASIK eye surgery that uses a virtual 3D model of an eye to deliver more personalised treatment has been shown to achieve better visual outcomes than the SMILE Pro laser vision correction technique, according to a study. The research, presented at the recent annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, involved 60 patients who received the new technique, known as wavelight plus, in one eye, and SMILE Pro in the other. Wavelight plus uses more than 100,000 data points from each patient’s eye to create a more personalised treatment. Multiple-rod constructs in thoracolumbar reconstructive spine surgery: Building a novel classification of heterogeneous rods for multiple etiologies (CHRoME) scoring system. To the best of our knowledge, there is no standardized universally accepted classification nomenclature for constructs with more than two spinal fusion rods and clinical correlation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to create a common language to enhance communication between both clinicians and researchers in spine reconstruction surgery for a variety of clinical scenarios with multiple-rod spine constructs. We have named this common language the “classification of heterogeneous rods for multiple etiologies” (CHRoME). The secondary purpose of this study is to further understand the potential clinical usefulness of this classification and test its inter- and intra-rater reliability.

Ophthopedia Update:Cataract surgery leads to ‘transient’ macular changes in AMD: Patients with age-related macular degeneration may have “transient” adverse macular changes after cataract surgery, but these usually resolve by 6 months later, according to a study published in Ophthalmology Retina. Patients who experience blurred vision after cataract surgery can now look on the bright side after the introduction of a new service at STARS. The Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (YAG) laser is used to treat cloudiness in the lens following cataract surgery, which affects around six percent of patients. The laser is made using YAG synthetic crystal material which generates a focused beam of light. Staff Specialist for Ophthalmology Dr Ashley Porter shared the details of this new service at STARS and the benefits for patients. “The introduction of the STARS YAG laser will increase access to this sight-restoring procedure," Dr Porter shares. "Vision is restored quickly with the procedure, and the results are permanent – the procedure doesn’t need to be repeated.” The YAG laser procedure is performed as a day clinic service with patients having a thorough assessment with an ophthalmologist beforehand. Samsara Vision is pleased to announce the initiation and the first surgery of the PERSPECTIVE clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Smaller-Incision New-Generation Implantable Miniature Telescope (SING IMT®) in pseudophakic patients. On September 30, 2025, Dr. John Conrath, a leading vitreoretinal and cataract surgeon at Centre Monticelli-Paradis, Marseille, France, conducted the first procedure. In CE-referenced countries where the SING IMT® is approved for use, surgeons participating in the PERSPECTIVE study are evaluating the implantation of the SING IMT® in late-stage AMD patients who have a previously implanted intraocular lens (IOL) used in cataract surgery. PERSPECTIVE clinical trial is just one more way that Samsara Vision is helping late-stage AMD patients reconnect to the things in life that they love to see and do.
