Where do we want our European food systems to be? How to head for a sustainable food system that provides for healthy diets?
Todays #NextBite2025 event organised by @EITFood & partners brought some new food for thought and great discussions.
Some highlights:
🧮 Harmonises methodologies for on-farm regenerative agriculture metrics is one of the policy priorities towards 2030 (Gijs Schilthuis DG Agri)
🧩 A clear interface between on-farm and food producer metrics (scope 3, CDP..) will help further accelerate acceptance by all value chain partners (Anastasia Volkova, Regrow Ag
🐛 Functional tests and market research with food products od 7 novel types of proteins (rapeseed, mealworm, krill, microbial, mushroom, fermented fungi, pea) learned that consumers prefer simple straight forward words, with still some reluctance visavis insects (Morena Silvestrini, CNTA, Spain, Nina McGrath)
🩵 Food is key for healthy ageing. It starts early. Life events such as moving out of the elderly home, getting a child or illness are pivotal moments for food habit change, generalist doctors to play a key role in food education.
💡The word of 'ultraprocessed foods', or the 'level of processing' are not a very helpful indications to label a food group nor for the healthiness. Quantities of (or absence of) sugar, sodium and saturated fats are.
☀️Jack Bobo (UCLA) urges to stop using the doom scenario narrative, not (only) to prepare for the most likely, but work towards the preferred and possible scenario
