The Art of Clean Communication: Diving into the Mediator Pattern I've been curious lately about design patterns that solve messy communication problems, and the Mediator pattern keeps coming up. It's truly worth learning about; the mediator pattern is a nice tool to have in your tool kit when engineering for communication. It shines in scenarios where data has to be validated, transformed, and transmitted. An example could be submitting data from a form on the web. Or any situation where we want to make API calls (POST, PUT, etc.) from any number of sources (UI, hardware, etc.). Extra points if we want to perform some transformation on the data’s state and then communicate this modified, “clean data” to the destination (server). The core idea is simple but powerful: establishing a designated "go-between" to manage interactions. This pattern is a lifesaver when you have an arbitrary number of participants (Colleagues) that need to talk without creating complex, tangled dependencies (Spaghetti code). It helps us decouple our designs, letting the Mediator handle the logic of who needs to talk to whom, turning complex N * N connections into simple N * 1 * N relationships. It keeps components focused on their own jobs, not on managing the entire communication bus. If you’ve ever had a situation where you had data logic in your UI, it may have been a situation where the mediator pattern could have come in handy. Bonus points if you had multiple forms sending similar but slightly different data to your server.
