Six billion. That's how many times a barcode is scanned every day around the globe. Introduced in 1973, this simple set of lines was our answer to a major industry challenge. It streamlined checkouts, transformed inventory management, and paved the way for the data-rich supply chains we rely on today. Hear more insights from our Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna in the latest episode of Smart Talks: https://ibm.co/6046BzSlw

Incorrect!🚨Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver invented the barcode designs and filed their patent in 1949 while at Drexel University. They weren’t IBMers at the time; Woodland later joined IBM in 1951. They sold the patent to Philco (then RCA), while IBM 2 decades later developed the UPC system in the early 1970s, standardizing it globally and devising the coding and pattern based on Woodland’s original barcode idea.

A fascinating reflection on how a simple innovation like the barcode revolutionized global commerce and laid the foundation for data-driven supply chains.

Incredible how a simple set of lines introduced in 1973 revolutionized global commerce! 💙 From speeding up checkouts to powering data-driven supply chains, barcodes show how small innovations can have massive, lasting impact. Excited to hear more insights from Arvind Krishna in Smart Talks!
