🌿I'm incredibly proud to share my review article, "The Meat Industry and How It Affects Biodiversity," co-authored with Gulen Yildiz Turp and published in Food Bulletin. Tackling this critical environmental challenge—the link between the meat industry and biodiversity loss—was essential. The paper highlights the profound impacts of land use, deforestation, and GHG emissions (like methane and nitrous oxide). However, our focus is on the path to sustainability. We provide an in-depth review of promising, integrated solutions: -Implementing Zero Deforestation Policies. -Adopting Sustainable Livestock Practices. -Promoting shifts toward diets like the Mediterranean diet, which has a lower environmental footprint. -Using tools like LCA and GLEAM to monitor the carbon footprint. I believe that fostering sustainable food systems is vital for our planet's future, and I hope this research contributes to that goal. 🌍 New publication out now: “Towards Nature-Friendly Consumption” 🌍   EU consumption is driving biodiversity loss across the globe — especially in the Global South.   Our new study “Towards Nature-Friendly Consumption” reveals how EU demand for 🦐shrimp, 🌾soy, and 🌴palm oil causes ecosystem destruction: From the loss of coastal mangroves for aquaculture ponds to the conversion of tropical savannas, forests and carbon-rich peatlands into fields or plantations.   The study shows that policy and economic decisions are key drivers — but also key levers for change. The discussion focused on ecolabelling, a perfect case study of the tensions between a two-fold ambition: 🛒 Help consumers compare products easily with simple communication 🚜 Reward farmers for sustainable practices and reflect farming systems' complexity Key challenges discussed: 📊 Using representative average data to make the calculation system accessible to all companies while rewarding agroecological practices 📢 Aggregating multiple environmental impacts (climate, biodiversity, water, and more) into a single score easily understood by the public 🔭 Integrating scientific innovations while ensuring long-term consistency The takeaway? Behind a simple sustainability score lie compromises balancing rigor, readability, and stability. Success depends not just on methodology, but on inclusive governance and stakeholder trust. By 2050, the global population will reach 10 billion. Feeding everyone sustainably is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Yet today, 90% of annual deforestation is driven by agricultural expansion — a practice that releases massive amounts of greenhouse gases and destroys biodiversity. Forests are vital carbon sinks and home to most terrestrial species. Clearing them is not the way forward. Instead, we must embrace sustainable intensification: producing more on the land we already have, while protecting soil, water, and ecosystems.
