In this brief, I examine the potential impacts of the Pact on Italy and Greece, two countries at the center of migration routes, and discuss Türkiye’s position as a candidate country. The EU’s New Pact on Migration and Asylum, adopted on 14 May 2024, represents a major step towards creating a fair and unified approach to migration and asylum across Europe. This new framework introduces measures to: Secure and strengthen external EU borders, Protect individual rights, Prevent any single Member State from bearing disproportionate pressure. As Member States largely welcome the Pact, could this be the solution to achieving balance and solidarity across the EU while addressing migration challenges effectively? Such an important piece on understanding the damage that current narratives on migration cause. Instead of seeing migrants and refugees as threats or victims, an approach seeing them as humans should be developed. Migrants and refugees deserve the same human rights as everyone else, and this is clearly not respected in the new European Pact on Migration. #refugeeswelcome

This establishes a set of rules that will help to manage arrivals in an orderly way, create efficient and uniform procedures and ensure fair burden sharing between member states.

This study focuses on the implications of the New Pact reforms’ implementation for coopera­tion with third countries. Through an analysis of the Asylum Procedures Regulation (APR) and the Asylum and Migration Management Regulation (AMMR), the study advances forward-looking reflections for more balanced and protection-oriented cooperation with third countries that can also serve the EU’s broader strategic interests.

The EUAA shifts operational support in Greece to focus on vulnerable applicants with the signing of our updated Operational Plan. With a significant increase in asylum applications since July 2023, including a surge in arrivals, the EUAA will focus its efforts on: ✅ Supporting vulnerable applicants and unaccompanied children, incl. strengthening support for victims of human trafficking ✅ Prioritising resources for processing new arrivals and registering applications ℹ️ Executive Director Nina Gregori & Greek Minister Dimitris Kairidis signed the amended Operational Plan in the margins of today's Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 Ministerial Conference on the Operationalisation of the Pact.

Adopted! The European Parliament has today approved the Migration and Asylum Pact. For the first time, we will have real solidarity at the centre of the EU policy on migration and asylum. This new Pact puts in place clear, reliable rules with more solidarity and shared responsibility among EU member states. It also includes new Asylum and Migration Management Regulation, a new Screening Regulation, a new Crisis and Force Majeure Regulation, revised rules under the Asylum Procedures Regulation, and a revised Eurodac Regulation.
