“History shows that when it comes to space nuclear power, the United States is far better at setting goals than seeing them through,” write Bhavya Lal and Roger Myers, PhD. Building on their extensive experience, they recommend ways to achieve NASA’s ambitious goal of landing a working nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030. https://lnkd.in/g6mpYBs6

NASA’s next big leap isn’t Mars—it’s a nuclear reactor on the Moon. If it happens, it won’t be because of NASA alone. It’ll be because manufacturers on Earth made it possible—designing the alloys, machining the parts, and building the systems that can survive where humans can’t. This is manufacturing’s real moonshot—one that could change our industry and clean energy here on Earth, too. Powerful piece from Dr. Ethan Karp on manufacturing’s role in powering the Moon. From NASA Glenn Research Center to MAGNET: The Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network….and the companies within the Aerozone, Northeast Ohio is proving that innovation here on Earth fuels what’s possible beyond it. As NASA advances these missions, we’re focused on attracting and connecting companies that can support this next generation of aerospace and energy technologies right here in the Aerozone. #AdvancedManufacturing #Aerospace #AerozoneAlliance #NortheastOhio Hrishue Mahalaha Mary Jo Schmidt

NASA could one day use nuclear-powered rocket engines to send astronauts to Mars. One of the proposed technologies is Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP), in which a nuclear reactor heats up hydrogen to about 2500C to generate thrust. Several nuclear fuel forms have been proposed (e.g., carbides, CERMET and CERCER) to endure the punishing conditions experienced in these reactors and systematic comparisons are missing. This is the intent of the attached document. Fuel compositions, core dimensions, temperature feedback, and the effect of water ingress on reactivity were estimated for each fuel form. Potential trade-offs were identified such as between the desire to use HALEU and the desire to simplify the reactivity control systems.

🌍🚀 The future of space exploration was in the spotlight at the first-ever international final of the Global HackAtom student championship, held in Moscow during World Atomic Week and supported by Rosatom. More than 50 talented students from Russia and 9 other countries presented groundbreaking projects on how nuclear technologies can drive humanity’s journey into space — from interplanetary travel and the first nuclear power plant in orbit, to the visionary concept of the "Silk Road 2100". 🏆 The winners: 1st place: TUPI Tech (Brazil) – modular nuclear reactor for interplanetary missions. 2nd place: Tahu Sumedang (Indonesia) – nuclear-based solution to maintain circadian rhythms on long flights. 3rd place: IsotopeX (Hungary) – nuclear-powered device for monitoring vital signs during space travel. This championship is not just a competition — it is a platform where bold ideas are born, showing how nuclear science can become the key to sustainable energy on the Moon and Mars, and even faster interplanetary journeys. 📩 For more Rosatom news, subscribe to the newsletter https://lnkd.in/dzswmPbc #GlobalHackAtom #WorldAtomicWeek #Rosatom #Innovation #FutureLeaders

Zeno Power has signed a deal with a French company to secure a supply of nuclear fuel for its radioisotope power systems. The company said Wednesday that Orano, a French nuclear recycler, will provide a steady supply of americium-241 that Zeno plans to use for the power systems it seeks to offer to NASA and others. Zeno is also developing strontium-fueled batteries under a Department of Defense contract for shorter, maritime-focused missions.
