For years, I've noticed a pattern that doesn't get discussed in mainstream OCD treatment conversations. People achieve significant symptom improvement - their compulsions reduce, their anxiety becomes manageable, their functioning improves. But then they tell me things like: "I should be celebrating, but I feel empty." "Something feels missing." "I'm better, but I don't feel like myself." This isn't talked about in treatment planning. It's not addressed in follow-up care. Most people think something is wrong with them personally. But what if there are predictable neurochemical reasons this happens? What if understanding these patterns could help people prepare for and navigate recovery more effectively? I've been researching this for months, diving into neuroscience literature, connecting dots between different fields of study. What I've discovered deserves looking into. Cognitive communication disorders are very common after an acquired brain injury (ABI), with an incidence of over 75% for moderate-to-severe injuries. If undiagnosed, misunderstood and untreated, cognitive communication challenges can continue to unfold chaos in people's lives, leading to social isolation, loss of education or employment, frustration, distress and emotional suffering. Looking forward to the new RCSLT guidance for people living with brain injury, families and professionals in further raising the profile of CCD and the role of Speech and Language Therapists in assessment and management. #RSCLT #ABI #TBI #Cognitivecommunicationdisorder #CCDguidelines #SpeechandLanguageTherapy #IDT
