Advisor for Agroecology | Bridging science and development cooperation for the transition to sustainable agriculture and climate resilience

Some impressions of agroecology in practice in Mozambique! Last week, we visited several of our BftW-partner organisations in and around the fertile lands of Buzi, Mozambique, a region that was among the hardest hit by Cyclone Idai in 2019. Entire communities lost their homes, crops, and livelihoods. Today, these same communities are rebuilding their lives, and agroecology is at the heart of that transformation! Some of things I really liked: Photo 1 & 2: CEDES-Sofala manages community-run demonstration fields where farmers learn agroecological practices and replicate them in their own fields. Photo 3 - 5: ADS-Sofala supports communities in cultivating diverse, nutrient-rich crops in homegardens using agroecological methods, to promote healthy diets with a strong focus on child nutrition. Photo 6: GMPIS empowers local women through their “activistas” - women trained to share knowledge e.g. on agroecology, processing and market access across their communities. For me, this visit was a reminder that agroecology is more than a way of farming: it’s a pathway to community development, gender equity, healthy diets and resilient food systems! Keep up the good work, partners!
