From Acorns to Action: Lessons from a Wrench My grandson, Gideon, found a wrench and asked my hubby what it was for. Hubby's response: "It's for nuts." Without skipping a beat, he ran and brought him an acorn. "Here's a nut, Pop-Pop!" Wrong nut, buddy, but fast thinking! 😂 It made me think about how often we, in the business world, hear a term, identify a "problem," and immediately jump to the most literal or common solution—the equivalent of finding a wrench and expecting it only to fit a bolt. Gideon saw a tool and a category ("nuts") and made an intuitive, lateral connection. This week, let's channel our inner Gideon: Don't be afraid of the "wrong" answer. Sometimes the most unconventional ideas—the "acorns" that seem out of place—can spark the truly innovative solutions. Focus on the Category, Not Just the Common Example. 🌍 Every business today seems busy defeating others in the trade war — chasing wins built on someone else’s failure. The rat race has made the win–lose principle , a universally accepted default mindset. From childhood, we’re taught to compete — not to collaborate. 🔸But here’s the paradox: When competition drives us, unity becomes useless. When employees compete against each other, the performance of the entire company suffers. Yet, when we unite behind a shared vision — co-creating and contributing to a common mission — the company wins. It’s not competition that makes organizations strong, but collaboration. I've always struggled to give myself grace because I don't believe I'm good enough without perfection. Someone recently reminded me: "High performers don't just have high standards - they also have high grace." And it hit me hard. I don't have it all figured out. But here are three things I'm experimenting with: 1️⃣ Separate outcome from worth When a performance goes poorly, I used to make it all about me and my capability. Now I'm practicing this reframe: I can only do my best with what I've been given. The result depends on factors I don't fully control. It creates space between what happened and who I am. 2️⃣ Challenge the belief that perfection is a prerequisite I've been operating like I must be perfect to be chosen. It's the only way to belong in this industry. But then I look around and see people succeeding without that prerequisite. And honestly? Sometimes it's infuriating. I'm using that observation as permission. If it's okay for them, it's okay for me. 3️⃣ Reality-check my expectations I tell myself: I can't be good at something I've never done before. This sounds obvious. But it's revolutionary for me. Because I expect myself to be perfect the first time. Every time. In music, opportunities are so rare that every single one feels high-stakes. But that scarcity mindset is making me smaller, not better. --- I recognize that this work is not done. Some days I still spiral into "not good enough without perfection." Some days a performance goes poorly and I still make it all about my worth. But these practices are giving me footholds. Small ones that guide me back to my center. The tiny gap between a decision and execution decides who wins… and who stays stuck. → 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻… People with a winner’s mindset move fast. “Yes, I’ll do it” → “Done.” People with a victim mindset? They agree. They plan. They talk. But that gap between decision and action… stretches endlessly. And so do their excuses. Recently, I coached a client who wasn’t seeing results despite having a clear game plan for her business. 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁'𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀: → “I didn’t get the time to start.” → “Too many other commitments.” → “Too much chaos.” I shared a story of another client: In June, I gave him a strategy for his personal goal winning in pickleball tournaments. Despite his own challenges, he started executing within hours. Results by October 2025: 🥈 Silver – state-level doubles 🥉 Bronze – state - level singles 🥉 Bronze – national level doubles The difference? Both had the strategy. One acted. The other hesitated. ○ Speed doesn’t guarantee success. ● But without it, success is nearly impossible. Mistakes will happen — that’s part of growth. But movement creates momentum.
