Delegation isn't Letting Go, It's Leveling Up I was recently listening to a podcast featuring Eugene Mbugua, a renowned filmmaker and entrepreneur, Founder & CEO of D&R Studios. He shared how, in the early days, he was doing everything himself: filming, editing, managing operations, staying up all night, and barely having time to rest. Then a mentor told him something that completely shifted his mindset: > “Stop working in the business, and start working on the business.” That advice changed everything for him. Instead of trying to do it all, he started building systems, hiring people, and trusting others to take ownership. And that’s when real growth began. That hit me. Because I see it all the time with leaders, founders, and professionals trying to do it all. Out of passion. Out of habit. Out of the belief that no one else can do it the same way. As an Executive Assistant, this story really resonated with me. Because delegation isn't just about freeing up time, it's about creating capacity for leadership. You can only build a business on your own energy for so long before it starts to break you. I was speaking yesterday with a third-generation Founder who’s expanding her family business. She’s passionate, visionary, and incredibly driven. Her managers have grown up with the business — loyal, hard-working, and dedicated. But she’s hit a familiar wall. Every decision, every problem, every piece of progress still feeds back up to her. She’s constantly firefighting. Her managers spend time giving updates instead of leading their areas. And no one’s really developed the leadership skills needed to take the business to the next level. It’s such a common story in founder-led businesses. You can build the early stages of growth on passion, belief, and vision. But you can’t scale on energy alone. If everything depends on you, you’ll eventually hit a ceiling — not because your business has stopped growing, but because you’ve run out of capacity. That’s when leadership becomes your greatest growth lever. If you’re a founder at this stage, here’s where to focus. 1️⃣ Step out and look forward. Invest in your managers - help them build the skills to lead with agility, independence, and creativity. Empower them to make decisions, lead people, and hold vision - freeing you up to focus on the next big opportunity for growth. Because the truth is, your next level of success doesn’t come from doing more - it comes from being more. That’s the work I do with founders every day - expanding leadership capacity so the business can scale without burning out its greatest asset: you.
