Great opening session this morning from John Elkington & Marga Hoek at ESG Summit Europe (now Futura). - Marga reminded us of world overshoot day is getting closer and closer to the start of the year: not enough focus on this narrative - Circular economy opportunities: buisnesses can become less reliable on large economies/complex supply chains and the challenges that come with it e.g. tariffs - John highlighted that we need to remember we will see an abundance of companies failing, whether that is a sustainability start up or a sustainability transformation project, and that is ok! We don’t have all the answers on how to fix the worlds biggest issues - several solutions that we build, with good intentions, will fail. Don’t give up hope because of this. - “The future is not something wait for, it’s something we design and build now” - We have a very strong focus on the negative side of sustainability this year, how certain governments have backtracked and so on, but let’s not forget how countries such as China are demonstrating sustainability as a huge competitive advantage for an abundance of sectors.

Creating a cohesive sustainability ecosystem in ASEAN requires cross-sector collaboration. As our Partner specialising in Sustainability and Climate Change, Bing Yi Lee points out, partnerships among banks, businesses, and advisors are key to co-creating scalable, bottom-up solutions for sustainability challenges. The UOB Sustainability Compass, co-developed with PwC, supports this by enabling SMEs in ASEAN to quickly assess their ESG readiness and plan actionable steps. Can’t wait to join this year’s Innovation Forum’s Sustainable Commodities and Landscapes Forum in Amsterdam next week and dive into important conversations shaping sustainable food production. Today’s World Food Day is a reminder that how we produce food is still deeply AND highly connected to deforestation (high-risk tropical commodities drive 97% of global deforestation). And when you add in the complex trade dynamics (which often can add pressure to key biomes like the Amazon) it makes me eager to hear how organizations are navigating these tough realities to produce sustainable commodities. The Tropical Forest Alliance will dig into how to navigate the EU’s policy uncertainties while still pushing progress forward. Plus, we will highlight a crucial but often still overlooked piece of the puzzle: farmer inclusion (especially smallholder farmers who rarely get the attention they deserve). If you’re curious about how we build sustainable, inclusive production landscapes, come hear from some amazing speakers, ask your questions, and connect with others who care about these issues as much as we do. Hope to see you there! The evolving EU rules are creating waves of uncertainty and unintended ripple effects impacting supply chains, sustainability goals, and long-term strategies. Curious how top companies are turning these challenges into opportunities? Join us to explore: ✅ How the changing regulatory landscapes are impacting companies in their sustainability efforts. ✅ How companies react to the uncertainties The expert panel includes industry leaders: Pat Venditti, Director, Nature and Land Use, Robertsbridge Maria Neguț, Associate Director Public Affairs, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Felipe Carazo, Head of Sustainable Commodities, World Economic Forum Wei Peng, Global Head of Sustainability – Grains and Oilseeds, Louis Dreyfus Company Moderator: Jacob A. Carbon’s ‘Hidden Passport’: Financing Sustainable Supply Chains From contracts to cargo, and suppliers to shelves, carbon flows invisibly through every stage of trade. Yet, it carries a climate cost that is often overlooked but increasingly impossible to ignore. This is what I call the “hidden passport” of carbon in my latest The Business Times Op-Ed, co-authored with Samuel Tan. Key takeaways: ✅ 1. Trade carries carbon, not just goods. The World Trade Organization estimates that 20-30% of global greenhouse gas emissions are embodied in traded goods. This highlights the urgent need to treat carbon as a core element of global commerce — one that must be measured, managed, and mitigated to avoid breaching our climate tipping points. ✅ 2. Corporate anchors are ESG multipliers. When large businesses embed sustainability into procurement and financing structures, they create ripple effects across their supply chains. This incentivises suppliers — especially SMEs — to adopt sustainable practices, strengthening ecosystem resilience and accelerating decarbonisation. ✅ 3. Finance can accelerate transformation. Supply chain financing must evolve from enabling transactions to enabling transformation across sectors. From green supplier financing in construction to responsibly-sourced aluminium in consumer goods, banks like UOB play a pivotal role in helping clients decarbonise while staying competitive. As ASEAN continues to strengthen its position as a global trade gateway, it also has a unique opportunity to lead in institutionalising sustainability across supply chains — transforming ESG into a strategic lever for long-term value creation, resilience, and regional competitiveness. SIBUR shares ESG practices with international partners SIBUR shared its experience in developing its own ESG practices at a Russia–China sustainability round table. The event, organised by Gazprombank, launched an open dialogue between the Russian business community and China’s leading ESG rating providers. Participants discussed obtaining independent ESG ratings, verifying sustainable-finance instruments, and developing carbon markets in Russia, China, and other BRICS countries. “The requirements of China’s ESG rating agencies are closely aligned with the country’s national goals, while also serving as a soft power tool, encouraging both local and foreign businesses to continuously improve their sustainability practices. For Russian companies, this is not only a challenge but also an opportunity to integrate into a rapidly growing market,” said Raisa Momot, Head of Sustainability & Circular Economy at SIBUR. The final conversation during today’s Sanlam ESG Barometer B20 Policy Impact Report launch focused on Turning Insight into Impact: How Business Can Champion Implementation, moderated by Iman Rappetti with Mxolisi Mgojo, Thando Maeko, Paul Hanratty, and Shameela Soobramoney (She/Her). The message was clear: if we’re serious about the just transition, we need to act. If we’re serious about sustainability, we need to stop thinking in short-term cycles and start building strategies for long-term growth and legacy. Not out of ego or financial returns - but to realise the full potential of our country and continent. We need to invest in solutions that benefit people and create real opportunities for communities to thrive. Those most affected by government and business decisions must be part of the conversation - so they too can move toward self-reliance and dignity. Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword. It’s an opportunity for inclusive growth and shared value that leaves no one behind. #JustTransition #Sustainability #B20 #SanlamESGBarometer #Implementation #SharedValue #EthicalLeadership #SocialImpact #AfricaForward To view or add a comment, sign in
