The age of volume-first #internationaleducation is drawing to a close. According to Times Higher Education, the era of the “big four” destinations has shifted to a broader “big 14” landscape but as one senior commentator pointed out, “do we have the composition, the distribution, the integrity and the quality that we want?” At Asia Careers Group SDN BHD (ACG), our focus is outcomes not entrants. It’s not enough to count how many students arrive, the question is: what are their careers doing afterwards? Our data across #China, #India, #ASEAN & beyond shows that internationally-educated #graduates increasingly follow non-linear pathways (#internships, contract work, freelancing) before landing full-time roles. For #universities, recruiters & policymakers: the strategic imperative has shifted. You must ask: • How many graduates are securing meaningful #employment (not just any #job)? • How quickly are they doing so, and in what kind of role? • Are you capturing and publishing outcome data for internationally-educated #alumni, not just inbound numbers? We have drawn repeatedly on ACG’s dataset in our commentary in University World News & the conclusion is clear: the brand of your programme is tied more closely to graduate success than to #student volume. My call to action: If you’re representing a university or policy body, let’s shift the metric from “how many came” to “how many are thriving”. For international students, there is no longer a “big four” of Anglophone study destinations - there is now a “big 14” as competition for talent heats up. Stephanie Smith, Shanghai-based trade commissioner with the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), said Chinese students heading overseas had traditionally chosen from the US, UK, Australia or Canada. That had changed since Covid. “The agents talk about the ‘big 14’,” Smith told the Australian International Education Conference (AIEC). “It puts us in a lot more of a competitive environment.” Hong Kong had become a “massive new market” for mainland Chinese students. Others included Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates and Ireland, which was “doing a good job at destination marketing in China”. France - aiming for 500,000 international students by 2027 - and Germany were considered safe and welcoming with good employment opportunities and low tuition fees. Turkey wants 500,000 international students by 2028. Kazakhstan’s target of 100,000 foreign students by 2028 has been increased by 50 per cent. In University World News, this may not be popular but re-envisioning the #university of the #future, is both urgent & necessary. With artificial intelligence impacting entry level #jobs & graduate vacancies, for young people to choose #highereducation change is needed. If #universities are going to remain relevant & continue as one of society’s pillars, minor adjustments will not suffice. Instead, fundamental reform is necessary, starting with a clear examination of the question: “What are universities for?” Universities, #students & governments often have different perspectives. Universities typically consider themselves as institutions dedicated to #education, valuing knowledge for its own sake. Students, on the other hand, largely view universities as a means to secure better #employment opportunities. This perspective aligns more closely with that of governments, which see universities as vehicles for preparing young people for the ‘#futureofwork’ while also contributing to societal advancement & economic growth. Given this misalignment between #highered, their primary consumers (students) & their financial backers (governments), an urgent realignment is required. Asia Careers Group SDN BHD

#Australia’s (& those in other English speaking countries #Canada, #UK & #USA) #highereducation sector faces a watershed moment. TEQSA’s inquiry into governance at The Australian National University costing taxpayers at least AUD 200,000 may seem like an isolated case. But it risks setting a far more significant precedent: one where government & regulators begin to encroach on the institutional autonomy universities have guarded so fiercely for decades. Universities were built on the principle of self-governance, balancing academic freedom with accountability to students, staff & the public. The ANU inquiry could mark the start of a new era of regulatory intervention into #university leadership & culture, blurring the lines between oversight & control. Once autonomy is ceded, it is rarely regained. When universities are under pressure from every angle, declining enrolments, global competition, AI disruption, & funding uncertainty the sector must decide whether to reform from within or risk having reform imposed from outside. The stats quo is no longer an option, as yet we don’t see much evidence of change but perhaps Vice Chancellors are on the cusp of revealing the university of the future? Asia Careers Group SDN BHD

Territories and countries like #SouthKorea & #HongKong, part of the so-called “Asian Tigers” alongside #Singapore & #Taiwan, now view international students & intra-East #Asian mobility as critical to sustaining economic growth in the region.  “We have a very different economic situation compared to the #UK or #Canada. We don’t have an employment problem – in fact, we need more people & more talent across the board,” said Jamie Tang secretary-general, University Grants Committee, Hong Kong SAR, during a session at the #IHEF2025, held last week at the University of Birmingham … A broader #immigration crackdown in recent years across major study destinations, including the UK, #US, Canada, & #Australia, has had significant repercussions for #internationalstudents … These changes, combined with more affordable options closer to home, relaxed residency requirements, lower tuition fees, & world-renowned #universities, are now prompting the traditionally West-bound cohort from East #Asia to look inward for #highereducation opportunities. In an effort to diversify that student body, #HongKong is increasingly targeting students from #India, #Nigeria, #SaudiArabia, #Indonesia, & other countries … Asia Careers Group SDN BHD
