Today’s young generation is growing up in a world that feels more virtual than physical. Print books are being replaced by digital editions. CDs and DVDs, once owned, touched, and collected, have given way to streams, downloads, and digital files. They spend more time playing online games than engaging in physical play. Almost everyone uses digital photos, yet very few have them printed. They rarely write or receive physical letters. Shopping, banking, gaming, and dating are moving decisively online. Digital wallets are making bank notes and coins almost irrelevant. Friendships and communities are increasingly online, often with more virtual friends than those they meet in person. Artificial intelligence is becoming a source of answers, ideas, and comfort. Some young people are now turning to chatbot companions or even AI “girlfriends” and “boyfriends” for connection, always available and free from conflict. Emotions are expressed through emojis and posts. Their universe already stretches into virtual and augmented reality, and may soon expand into the metaverse. This transformation raises urgent questions: 🔹 How does it shape their offline interactions? 🔹 How will empathy, relationships, and community evolve in a world where the digital feels more “real” than the physical? 🔹 What social, emotional, and ethical consequences will this shift bring? What’s the best way to win over a disgruntled hospital patient? Watch Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s masterclass in the below video as he natters away to NZSE’s virtual reality patient about the joys of grandchildren.    Last month, when Luxon officially opened NZSE’s city campus, he tried out our cutting-edge collaboration with Waxeye, which features a prickly patient with a bad prognosis.    Mr Anderson was born from Group Academic Director Dr Neel Pandey’s idea of utilising immersive technology in the classroom.    As tertiary providers around the world grow wary of AI’s increasing prevalence in education, NZSE has seized it as an opportunity to better prepare learners for the careers ahead of them.    “There is a lot of pressure on healthcare workers to get it right,” says NZSE student Tanya Hodgkinson. “We deal with serious issues and consequences. We deal with people from all cultures and belief systems… but VR allows you to play with certain angles and learn in a comfortable environment. It takes the risk element right out.”    We’ve seen first-hand how VR can demonstrate a learners’ understanding of a concept, as they can’t just use a large language model to finish an essay — they actually have to put it into practice with the AI patient.    You’ll see the depth of Mr Anderson as he converses with PM Luxon. He is fearful, at times untrusting, his wife has passed away, and he was a school teacher in Timaru. It is up to the user to learn how to develop trust as the support worker on duty.    Luxon’s strategy is to discuss when Mr Anderson will next see his grandchildren, and it works to lighten his mood.
