AI in retail is flooding my feed. But AI ROI? Somehow not many want to discuss it. That’s what I appreciated about my colleagues Mariia Polianska and Anton Lohvynenko in their recent webinar: numbers and real cases. Here’s what stood out to me: 🔥 Electronic shelf labels: ROI in 18–30 months. 🔥 Warehouse automation: 6–36 months. 🔥 Cashierless checkout: 12–24 months. I’ll be honest: when I look at these timelines, I don’t see “innovation.” I see budget math. It reminds me of working on cars: you can bolt on a shiny aftermarket part that looks cheap, but if it doesn’t keep the engine running a year later, it was a bad investment. Retail tech works the same way. Off-the-shelf looks cheap. Until you try scaling, integrating with your ERP, or adding AI pricing logic. Suddenly the “savings” stall out. Custom systems? Higher upfront. But you own the code, the data, and the roadmap. That’s what makes ROI predictable. Put simply: the biggest cost isn’t buying the wrong tech. It’s buying the right tech the wrong way. It’s the kind of hard truth I wish more retail leaders talked about openly.
