By funding employees of PMA members to go where the learning really happens - internationally, inside other members' media organisations - the Global Grants programme, supported by the Grace Wyndham Goldie Trust, enables travel to peer organisations around the world; exchanging skills, knowledge and ideas, strengthening freedom of expression and advancing sustainable development goals across the sector. The approach is simple yet powerful: learn by doing, learn by sharing. Grantees return home not only with new techniques but with stories of collaboration, innovation and resilience. Those stories are then shared across PMA’s global network, turning local learning into collective insight. 🟦 PROFFORMANCE Development Program Conference 🟦 On October 16, 2025, Péter Levente Lakatos, Director General of the Hungarian Accreditation Committee (MAB), contributed to the PROFFORMANCE Development Program Conference. The event focused on the Continuous Development Cycle (CDC), which aims to strengthen continuous improvement and collaboration in higher education. During the program, participants worked together on setting goals, conducting competence assessments using the PROFFORMANCE Assessment Tool (PAT), and developing joint strategies and action plans to further enchancing the quality of learning and teaching. 🎉🎉 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: PROFFORMANCE+ final event in Budapest On 16 October, nearly 90 higher education professionals from 14 countries gathered in Budapest to celebrate the culmination of the PROFFORMANCE+ project. The event marked the end of a 5-year journey of strategic collaboration, innovation, and network development. 🏆 We honoured the winners of the PROFFORMANCE Higher Education Teacher Award 2024/25 and explored how the PROFFORMANCE toolkit—including the Assessment Tool, Short Courses, and Teaching Excellence Database—can be used to drive quality development in teaching and learning. 💡 Through interactive workshops, stakeholder group work, and live testing of the Assessment Tool, participants defined SMART objectives and planned actionable steps to implement change across institutional, national, and international levels. 🌍 The event reinforced the power of inter-level dialogue and continuous development—and reminded us that the PROFFORMANCE community is still growing and open to new members! This past week, I had the opportunity to attend ESEM 2025, supporting the conference here in Hawaiʻi and presenting a paper that was part of my PhD, “Software solutions for newcomers’ onboarding in software projects: A systematic literature review,” in the Journal-First track. I am grateful to my co-authors Katia Felizardo, Igor Steinmacher, PhD, and Marco Aurélio Gerosa. In this paper, we reviewed 32 studies to examine software solutions for onboarding newcomers to software projects. We found that: (1) a range of strategies exists, with recommendation systems being the most prevalent; (2) most software solutions are web-based; (3) solutions target a variety of onboarding aspects, with a focus on process; (4) many onboarding barriers remain unaddressed by existing software solutions; (5) laboratory experiments are the most commonly used method for evaluating these solutions; and (6) diversity and inclusion aspects primarily address experience level. Our goal is to identify research opportunities to develop more inclusive software solutions for onboarding. Had a catch-up session the other day with my former classmate, Lerato Moepye, and our conversation really hit home about developing Young Professionals (YPs) in organisations. She shared a powerful piece of advice that I found resonant and wanted to pass along: "YPs You Are a Brand - Be Visible." We all joke about saying "nothing from my side" or keeping our cameras off in meetings, but in the long run, that habit won't help you grow as a YP. My challenge to YPs? Prepare: When you get the agenda, take a few minutes to read up. Even using Copilot to brainstorm strategic questions can make a difference. Remember, you were invited for a reason. Engage Broadly: Even if you're in operations and the topic is finance—it concerns you. If you aspire to lead that division one day, start learning the language now by listening and engaging. Speak Up: Don't leave a meeting unclear because you're afraid to ask a "silly" question. Clarity is professional. Sometimes visibility is your voice; other times, it's your posture and presence. NB: Be strategic. Visibility matters, but don't overdo it. The online phase of EGAP Ideathon 2025 has started! 💫 Over the week, 19 teams will refine and stress-test their submitted ideas to win the final and claim prizes of 100 000 – 250 000 UAH. What are the themes? ✔️ Chatbots (including AI-powered) ✔️ Resident portals ✔️ Intelligent assistant for analyzing regulatory/legal acts ✔️ Council Member portal ✔️ Dashboards and maps on community websites ✔️ Inclusion and accessibility ✔️ Community investment passport and financial profile ✔️ Platforms for students, volunteers, NGOs, and collaboration on recovery projects What will the week look like? 1️⃣ Day – joint design-thinking session: introductions, ground rules, work, and first-hypothesis review. 2️⃣– 3️⃣ Days – joint Q&A, mentoring sessions, and checkpoints with the facilitator. 4️⃣ Day – semifinal prep: teams polish artifacts and presentations. 5️⃣ Day – semifinal: teams pitch; organizers select up to 12 strongest.
