Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy

NEW: The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan is investing £2.7 million in air quality filters for over 200 schools across our city - because every child deserves to breathe clean air. It was fantastic to visit St Mark’s Primary School in Battersea with the Mayor to see the filters in action - another important step to protect children’s health and tackle toxic air where it matters most. This new investment builds on years of bold action that have made London a world leader in clean air. For the first time ever, Londoners are breathing cleaner air within legal limits a 200 years sooner than experts predicted when Sadiq became Mayor in 2016. At the heart of this success is the London-wide ULEZ, the largest clean air zone of its kind, with 97% of vehicles now meeting the latest Euro standards. London also has Europe’s largest zero-emission bus fleet, over 23,000 public EV chargers, and a five-fold increase in safe cycle lanes, 600+ School Streets, and 20mph zones rolled out across the city. Together, these measures are cleaning up our air, improving public health, and making our city’s streets cleaner, safer, and healthier for every Londoner.

In Danish schools, we have implemented dust-binding solutions that require no electricity or filters. Dust levels have been reduced by more than 80%, and both students and teachers experience improved well-being, better learning outcomes, and a much healthier indoor environment. Want to learn more? Yet you do nothing about the highest polluter in transport the diesel powered transport refrigeration unit delivering food to schools every day. In California they noted that these units are "risk to life" with there emissions yet the TFL will not ban them even when the DFT says you can in the ULEZ terms.
