Michael Jackson’s Post

Of Europe's top 10 universities, only two are in the EU, with those two both being in Munich. 🍻 The area of southern Germany and Switzerland - with an axis of Zurich and Munich - is continental Europe's best chance for having a vibrant deeptech focused region. https://lnkd.in/eq4W995h

Europe should be more interested in having UK back. Brexit is bad for both not JUST UK.

Michael Jackson, indeed, and we as Technical University of Munich are ready to join forces with ETH Zürich and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)/#CyberValley to form a #GoldenAITriangle, with the Dieter Schwarz Foundation in Heilbronn as a critical orchestrator! I'm surprised you put so much emphasis on rankings, Michael. I disagree, and outline my reasons here: https://bits-chips.com/article/im-not-an-academic-im-an-engineer/.

You will find that English-language universities perform better in THE global rankings (something they are trying to improve on) because the underlying metrics—citations, research visibility, and international collaboration—favour English-language publishing and networks. It’s less about academic quality, and more about structural advantages in global communication, data coverage, and accessibility within the dominant research language: English.

The axis is Zurich - Lausanne, though! 😄

I'd argue that university ranking system doesn't really do justice to German Universities, as a lot of the research done in Germany is through institutes like Max Planck, Robert Koch, FZI etc. I'd love to see a lot more collaboration between the universities, for instance Mannheim and KIT could offer an awesome joint tech / business degree. Research funding also tends to be fragmented. For instance Darmstadt and Karlsruhe are really close to each other, but are in different states. I'm pleased to see the pioneering work of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation to foster more collaboration. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has been, and is home to many great researchers and entrepreneurs, from Karl Benz to SAP founders and more. Prof. Dr. Alexander Maedche Andreas Oberweis

Only because of a regrettable vote under Boris Johnson.

The University of Edinburgh might only be no. 7, but the city looks get the front page.
