Today is my final day in FCDO as I take voluntary exit from an institution that I joined aged 17 in 1984. It has been an extraordinary privilege to have served in some of our most fascinating and diverse posts - Malaysia, Russia, Ghana, Saudi Arabia, Greece, India, Pakistan and Somalia. They were rewarding, stimulating and exciting in so many ways. Short stints in Afghanistan and Italy, and a period on sabbatical to gain experience in the private sector, have made for an action-packed and fun-filled career. To have ended this journey as head of mission in Mogadishu, serving with some of the most dedicated public service professionals anyone could hope to work alongside, has been a highlight. But then again, it is the people in all those locations, who made my family and I feel so welcome, who have made the adventure all the more pleasurable and memorable. I’m profoundly grateful to them all. I depart full of gratitude at being given such a special opportunity and fulfilment with all that I was able to experience. Thank you to everyone who helped and supported me, including of course my wife and children. I’m very excited about the next stage. More to follow on that when the time is right. Adieu.
Best wishes for the future Mike.
Congratulations! It may feel odd being in the outside after so many years. Remember to join the FCDOA to stay connected with your former colleagues. Good luck with whatever comes next!

Wow! I can remember the young Mike from his "more junior" days at the FCO in the late 80s. Mike - it has been a joy and a privilege to share your journey and progress since then. You and your family can look back with huge pride at all you have achieved. Many congratulations, and we all know you have plenty more to to give, Rich
