Over the last couple of months I've been further scoping what my CECAN Centre for Evaluating Complexity Across the Nexus Fellowship will explore - and I think I've started to narrow in on some questions! It's been great to have time to delve into literature and speak to some very smart people to help me unpack my interests. At the crux of what I'll be exploring are some key questions: ⚖️ What does it mean to be 'place-based'? Or, in other words, what does (and should) bringing the concept of place into our thinking do to how opportunities and change is conceptualised? 🛜 There are many 'methods lists' that exist - Social Network Analysis is often held up as a 'good method' in place-based approaches. However, with 'place' as a throughline, how does the suitability of such methods change? 💪 What are some of the best practices or principles that are required when bridging systems + place when we get to the 'pointy' end of things like investing in place-based approaches and their evaluation? In other words, I'm focusing on the recursive relationship between systems methods and place, and how they can inform commissioning and evaluation. By the end of my Fellowship (early next year) I'll produce a report that addresses these questions - with commissioners and practitioners my audience. If this sounds of interest and you want to address any associated questions or challenges, pop them in the comments! #place #evaluation #commissioning
Would love to chat more with you about this!
Oh I just shared this, and scrolled down and saw your post Matt Healey - maybe some provocations in there for you to consider! https://www.linkedin.com/posts/samrye_putting-the-place-back-in-place-based-activity-7385286478849024000-wxpj

Happy to offer time to help you test concepts and thoughts along the journey Matt.
Well done Matt, look forward to seeing how it goes

4wHi Matt, may I point you in the direction of our National Evaluation and Learning Partner website. NELP have been working with us to evaluate and develop our understanding of place-based systemic approaches to tackling physical activity inequalities through Sport England Place Partnerships. Including the development of a Conceptual Framework identifying 3 interconnected areas of action and within that sets out a number of features or characteristics of systems – conditions – that may be necessary for tackling these inequalities. Happy to chat more about this if helpful or connect you with our NELP colleagues.
