🌍♻️ Another significant step forward for sustainable waste management in Greece! The Interministerial Committee on Public-Private Partnerships has approved a new PPP project with a total budget of €157.2 million for the construction of three Integrated Waste Recycling and Recovery Units in Syros, Paros, and Mykonos, as well as a Waste Transfer Station in Tinos. The project addresses the pressing challenges of solid waste management in the islands. The objectives are clear: ✔️ Reduce landfill disposal ✔️ Minimize environmental impacts through biowaste processing ✔️ Produce reusable materials and energy ✔️ Enhance sustainable resource use and create economic benefits 🤝 The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), through its Greek Project Preparation Facility (GPPF), provided valuable technical assistance for the prefeasibility study – a key contribution that supported the project’s design and preparation. With this approval, Greece now counts 12 waste management PPP projects, of which 5 are already operational. PPP has established itself as the prevailing tool for implementing modern waste management infrastructure in the country, supported by a blended financial structure that combines public and private resources to maximize efficiency, attract investment, and deliver long-term value. In total, these projects represent over €1 billion in investments, reshaping Greece’s environmental and social landscape while paving the way for sustainable growth. 🚀 A strategic move for the South Aegean, setting a strong example for sustainable regional development. #Sustainability #WasteManagement #PPP #CircularEconomy #SouthAegean #GreenTransition #EBRD #InfrastructureFinance #publicprivatepartnerships

♻️ Transforming Waste Management into a Pillar of Sustainable Development in the MENA Region 🌍 Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working extensively across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region on a wide range of solid waste management projects. These experiences (spanning diverse countries, operational contexts, and institutional frameworks) have shaped a deep understanding of what it truly takes to build effective and sustainable waste management systems. From developing national strategies and planning infrastructure to overseeing implementation and improving operational performance, my work has consistently focused on bridging the gap between policy and practice. I’ve led efforts to enhance collection and transportation systems, optimize treatment processes, and ensure long-term system sustainability through continuous monitoring and evaluation. One key insight I’ve gained is that solid waste management is not only a service that municipalities provide to citizens; it is a foundational pillar of sustainable development. It directly impacts public health, environmental protection, resource conservation, climate action, and the transition toward a circular economy. In regions like MENA, where environmental challenges intersect with rapid urbanization and limited resources, the strategic role of waste management becomes even more critical. Building resilient and effective waste systems demands more than technical knowledge. It requires strategic vision, hands-on field experience, and the ability to adapt to diverse local contexts. This is the approach I strive to apply in every project I undertake; developing practical and sustainable solutions that reflect the real needs of communities while leveraging the best international practices. By integrating engineering, strategic planning, and operational management, and by aligning with national environmental and economic policies, we can create systems that are not only technically sound but also socially and institutionally viable. My goal is to continue contributing to this transformation, helping shape waste management as a driver of sustainable development across the MENA region and beyond. #SustainableDevelopment #WasteManagement #CircularEconomy #MENARegion #EnvironmentalEngineering #InternationalCooperation #UrbanDevelopment #PublicHealth #ClimateAction #InfrastructureDevelopment #GlobalPartnerships #SDGs #GreenTransition #DevelopmentProjects #SolidWasteSolutions

The CLOCC (Clean Oceans through Clean Communities) program, initiated by Sirk Norge, funded by Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, and implemented by local partner GO Circular Indonesia (GO SIRK), works to strengthen community-based waste management, including strengthening institutions and cadres of the Village Waste Bank in Wongaya Gede, Tabanan, Bali. A total of 36 cadres, known as TAPE Uli (Tangan Peduli Lingkungan-Caring Hands for The Environment), have been facilitated to become the frontliners in source-based waste management. One of the key approaches is training using the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method. Through PRA, cadres are not only trained to jointly identify problems, potentials, and solutions for waste management, but also to grow as independent facilitators. This independence is crucial for delivering effective education, raising awareness on waste segregation at the source, and encouraging active community participation in the Village Waste Bank activities. As part of the ongoing “Learning from Villages” series by GoSirk Institute, in collaboration with Udayana University, this story highlights how PRA has become an essential tool for empowering Waste Bank cadres in Wongaya Gede. 👉 Watch the video below and discover how change begins with awareness from within. 👉Explore more inspiring insights on village waste management practices on the GoSirk Institute YouTube channel. Team EnviroServ is looking forward to the 2025 Landfill & Waste Treatment Conference! With South Africa home to numerous landfill sites, many of which face technical and environmental challenges, conferences like this are crucial for sharing knowledge, raising standards, and promoting responsible waste management. From 22–24 October at the Riverside Hotel in Durban, the event will focus on landfill practices, waste treatment, and advancing technologies across the sector. EnviroServ is proud to sponsor this year’s conference, hosted by the Landfill & Waste Treatment Interest Group (LaWTIG) of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA). Three of our experts — Dr Nthabiseng Motsoane presenting a technical paper, Mandla Thwala participating in a panel discussion, and Dheena Govender highlighting EnviroServ’s capabilities — will share their insights and experience with fellow industry leaders. We look forward to engaging with peers in the industry and contributing to solutions that drive sustainable and safe waste management in South Africa and beyond.

Even before 2022, Ukraine faced a waste management emergency: - 90% of municipal solid waste went to landfills - Less than 7% recycled – among Europe's lowest rates - Nearly all 6,000+ landfills fail to meet EU environmental standards The war has dramatically worsened the situation. Building debris, contaminated materials from damaged facilities, and strained services have triggered illegal dumping and serious public health risks. Enter Wm4U 🇸🇪🇺🇦 This Swedish long-term initiative is working to bring Ukraine's waste management up to EU standards – tackling both the immediate crisis and building foundations for sustainable change. Supporting Ukraine's recovery means more than reconstruction. It means building systems that protect health, environment, and future prosperity.
