Anil Kumble - The name synonyms to quality, sincerity & commitment. With unique feats such as being second player in history of game to take all 10 wickets in a Test innings — and that too against a strong Pakistan side — and being the highest wicket-taker for India, his record speaks volumes. But what truly stands out above all is his unmatched commitment to the game. One of the most inspiring examples of that came during India’s 2002 tour of the West Indies. The series was poised at 1-1when fourth test started at Antigua. While India was batting first, Anil Kumble was hit on face by a fast bowler Merv Dillion. He spat out blood but continued to stay at the crease for another 20 minutes to ensure India post huge total . Post India’s batting it was diagnosed that Anil’s jaw was broken and required surgery. It was decided that he will leave the test match and will fly to Bengaluru next day. Then came the moment of supreme dedication. Anil told captain Sourav Ganguly that he will take to the field and will bowl. Everyone was stunned with his determination. With heavily strapped jaw, he sent down 14 consecutive overs from one end and got important wicket of Brian Lara. Truly inspiring story for generations to follow. Anil Kumble is epitome of discipline. In the days he started his cricket career, every player was also having some corporate job. After his mechanical engineering he took a corporate job and for whatever time he got in between games he used to attend meetings and office sincerely. A technocrat by education ventured into sports and management company post his retirement and was instrumental in developing IOT devices for cricket bat to measure speed & impact. I had privilege to meet him many times when he was coach for India’s Men’s National Team. This picture is taken at Oval during the 2017 Champion’s Trophy and remains as my favourite picture. My fellow journalist photographer took it while I was showing something to Anil. If you have registered for IBM THINK Mumbai happening at Jio Convention Centre on October 15th, don’t miss the opportunity to listen to Anil Kumble…..affectionately known as “Jumbo” in the cricketing world. A truly fitting nickname for a man with Jumbo-sized achievements! #IBM #Think2025 #AnilKumble #Leadership #Discipline #Inspiration #Cricket #IBMThinkMumbai
