It’s great to see the European Commission taking a more proactive approach toward ensuring AI deployment across Europe. With its new AI package - including the Apply AI and AI in Science strategies - the goal, as EVP Henna Virkkunen put it, is to “spark innovation and make European businesses more competitive.” Though after following the press conference, I have more questions. When asked whether the Apply AI Strategy aims to prioritise EU-based firms, Virkkunen initially sidestepped the question but later emphasised that the EU should “favour European solutions” where possible - particularly through public procurement. On funding, she confirmed: - An additional €1 billion will be invested across strategic sectors under Apply AI - Under Horizon Europe, funding for AI in Science will double to €3 billion Will this be enough to close Europe’s competitiveness gap and scale adoption to meet the Digital Decade target of 75% of EU businesses using AI by 2030? What I’m especially glad to see are the targeted measures toward boosting AI adoption in #energy and #climate. Some key initiatives in this space to watch: ⚡️ From Q1 2026 – Support for developing AI models to advance forecasting, optimisation, digital twins, and system balancing within the energy system, leveraging cloud-edge-IoT infrastructure. ⚙️ From Q4 2026 – A standardisation request on reporting and documentation processes for AI systems’ energy impact. 🌍 From Q4 2026 – Establishment of a Community of Practice to foster trust in AI for critical energy operations, linked to digital twin and extreme weather preparedness initiatives. 🛰️ From Q4 2025 – Deployment of an open-source AI Earth-system frontier model as part of Destination Earth, providing AI-based local digital twins (integrating Copernicus data) for climate risk prediction and urban/rural planning. 🏙️ From Q4 2026 – Support for Local Digital Twin tools to assist urban planning and post-disaster reconstruction. The next challenge will be ensuring these initiatives translate into tangible deployment, to ensure we stay in the race.

💭 Friday Thought Everyone’s talking about AI and data — but are we actually doing anything with it? A conversation earlier this week got me thinking… We talk a lot about data, insights, and AI in buildings but there are really two main challenges: 1️⃣ Getting data out of buildings and siloed systems. 2️⃣ Turning those insights into action that saves energy. Thankfully, there are now simple ways to connect sites that weren’t previously connected. Even legacy systems without IP connectivity are challenging, but far from impossible. Where many focus on data collection and reports that suggest what could be done, we’ve flipped that on its head — delivering automated, guaranteed savings first, and then using analytics to uncover further potential. In other words, we help create the budget for future energy measures through no-cost dynamic optimisation. Across Europe, much of our building stock, especially pre-1960s — wasn’t designed with interoperability in mind. Every system speaks a slightly different language, and valuable insights often stall without human intervention or costly upgrades. That’s why hybrid approaches make sense. Start with AI optimisation that works with what’s already there — free up budget through savings — then reinvest in low-cost, high-impact retrofits that improve comfort, control, and data granularity. It’s a smarter route to progress: ➡️ Self-funded improvements ➡️ Quick wins today ➡️ Long-term capability tomorrow The exciting part? Each step makes the next one easier, until even legacy estates start behaving like next-gen smart buildings.
