https://www.grants.gov/ Government funding for STEM after-school programs is available through federal initiatives like the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) initiative, the Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) grants under Title IV of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Additionally, you can explore state and local funding opportunities, such as New York City's large investment in after-school programs through the COMPASS NYC initiative. Non-profit organizations and state education agencies are key conduits for these funds, and the Afterschool Alliance provides comprehensive resources for identifying and accessing these funding streams. Federal Funding Sources 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC): This is the primary federal funding source for after-school, before-school, and summer learning programs. These grants help support programs that accelerate academic growth, though they are not exclusively STEM-focused, they can be used to fund STEM activities. Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) Grants: Part of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), these grants from Title IV can be used to support after-school enrichment, including STEM activities. National Science Foundation (NSF): The NSF offers grants to support educational projects, including programs that focus on STEM education. Title I of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA): Funds from Title I are directed to schools in low-income communities and can be used to support after-school programs for these students, including STEM initiatives. State and Local Funding State Education Agencies: State departments of education, such as the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), administer funds, including the Learning and Enrichment After-School Program (LEAPS) initiative, which can be used for after-school programming. Local Funding: Cities, such as New York City, invest in after-school programs, with initiatives like COMPASS NYC, which serves students in the city's public schools and community centers. State and Local Fiscal Relief Funds (SLFRF): These funds, established during the pandemic, offer flexible funding options that cities and counties can use for a variety of purposes, including after-school and summer programs. Where to Find More Information Afterschool Alliance: This is a valuable resource for information on after-school funding, including federal and state opportunities, grants, and policies. Grants.gov: A central online platform where federal government agencies post grant opportunities. NYC Department of Education: For specific opportunities within New York City, the DOE's website is a key resource for finding information on after-school programs like COMPASS NYC.

This is a crucial point, and it becomes even more significant when considering children who have experienced trauma, such as sexual abuse. Mirror neurons, which allow children to instinctively mimic and internalise the emotions and expressions of those around them, play a central role in how they learn social cues and boundaries. When a child experiences abuse, these same neurons are engaged—but instead of reinforcing safety, empathy, and trust, they encode fear, shame, and confusion. As a result, these children may unconsciously mirror expressions of mistrust or self-protection, even in safe environments. Their attempts to interact with the world are often filtered through this trauma: a smile may be hesitant, a touch may provoke anxiety, or eye contact may feel threatening. Others may misinterpret these behaviours as aloofness, disinterest, or defiance, further isolating the child and reinforcing the cycle. The ripple effects extend far beyond childhood. Because mirror neurons shape our social learning, the early internalisation of trauma can influence relationships, emotional regulation, and social perception throughout life. This underscores the critical importance of attentive, trauma-informed caregiving and consistent, responsive interactions—especially in a world where caregivers are increasingly distracted by technology.

Have you ever stopped to wonder what happens when you’re sitting with your children, but your eyes are fixed on your phone instead of on them? Those little moments of disconnection matter more than we think. When our attention drifts away, our children notice — and it shapes how they see themselves, and how they believe the world sees them. If this thought sparks something in you, I explore it deeply in my new book Raising Resilient Children, available globally now. #children #tech #education #parenting

An incredible new community resource and powerful tool from our partners at Learn to Earn Dayton! In collaboration with the Children's Funding Project, L2E Dayton has just announced the launch of the brand new Ohio Children and Youth Fiscal Map! What is it? It's the first comprehensive, public dashboard that documents and analyzes nearly 500 state and federal funding streams supporting children and youth programs across Ohio. This map provides clarity and access to details on funding streams, enabling us to move beyond simply dedicating funds and instead focus on getting the greatest return on investment. In other words, it helps advocates and policymakers ensure every dollar is invested strategically to get our students and families the positive outcomes they deserve. Anyone can now explore trends, funding sources, and specific programs using the public dashboard. MAP➡️https://lnkd.in/eDy_ewEK 💡Ready to Learn More? Learn to Earn Dayton and the Children's Funding Project will host a free webinar on Tuesday, October 21st at 11am.
