Joe Wilson (Open Scotland Co Founder) reflects on the challenges of advancing open education in a country where education is seen as a public good—yet lacks strong governmental leadership. Teachers are changemakers. 👩🏫👨🏫 At the KIX EMAP Hub, we believe that strong education systems depend on the people in the classroom. Through peer learning, capacity strengthening and knowledge mobilisation, we strive to equip decision-makers with the evidence, innovation and support they need to improve the reality in the classroom. Over the last couple of months I've been further scoping what my CECAN Centre for Evaluating Complexity Across the Nexus Fellowship will explore - and I think I've started to narrow in on some questions! It's been great to have time to delve into literature and speak to some very smart people to help me unpack my interests. At the crux of what I'll be exploring are some key questions: ⚖️ What does it mean to be 'place-based'? Or, in other words, what does (and should) bringing the concept of place into our thinking do to how opportunities and change is conceptualised? 🛜 There are many 'methods lists' that exist - Social Network Analysis is often held up as a 'good method' in place-based approaches. However, with 'place' as a throughline, how does the suitability of such methods change? 💪 What are some of the best practices or principles that are required when bridging systems + place when we get to the 'pointy' end of things like investing in place-based approaches and their evaluation? In other words, I'm focusing on the recursive relationship between systems methods and place, and how they can inform commissioning and evaluation. By the end of my Fellowship (early next year) I'll produce a report that addresses these questions - with commissioners and practitioners my audience. If this sounds of interest and you want to address any associated questions or challenges, pop them in the comments! #place #evaluation #commissioning

We just sent Sabine Bergner and Johanna Stadlbauer's new publication: 'Fiasco Fest: The Pedagogy Playbook' to all of our supervisors, and the Glasgow Research Culture Community. They say: "Fiascos are a core element of research. To find creative solutions and make new discoveries, researchers frequently try out things without knowing whether they will work. To a certain extent, fiascos are an inbuilt part of academic careers: every researcher encounters rejections for fellowships, jobs, or papers along their path. While failure and rejection are common in (academic) life, most people would very much prefer not to experience them personally. This attitude is mirrored in the wider research culture, and so there remains a scarcity of open spaces for discussing failure." "Existing inequalities make it more likely for some to succeed, while others are actually failed by the system. To enable researchers to benefit from vulnerability and community, it is essential to create conditions that make the academic environment safer for the public sharing of professional setbacks. As outlined above, activities like the Fiasco Fest are placed in a complex environment and can only play a small part in changing research culture. But organising a Fiasco Fest is still worthwhile, because central tenets of good research, such as risk-taking, courage, a spirit of innovation, and learning from mistakes should be equally accessible to all and should be carefully fostered." https://lnkd.in/eSNgriAb

Let’s join forces to survive the grant apocalypse 💡🤝 US research funding cuts are reshaping the academic landscape. In our latest article, Chris Enke shares decades of perspective, from pre-Sputnik labs with shared equipment to today’s high-tech, grant-dependent research groups — and warns of the risks ahead if support continues to erode. He makes the case for collective action: universities, societies, and scientists pooling resources to ensure students still get the hands-on experience they need, even as budgets shrink. 📄 Read the full article: https://ow.ly/MbWq50WEqRw #ResearchFunding #AcademicResearch #SciencePolicy #STEMEducation

It’s interesting to see how many universities are still feeling the impact of post-COVID license expansions. Insights like these are so valuable for university leaders looking to manage costs strategically, and the practical tips on pushing back effectively are especially useful. Definitely worth a read for anyone navigating renewals.
I speak with university leaders almost every day, and Panopto comes up constantly. Since COVID, many universities upgraded their licence counts to support hybrid learning. But now, even with reduced usage, renewal prices keep climbing, even when bought through framework agreements that are designed to make life easier. This short read breaks down why that’s happening and how universities can push back effectively. Put together by our amazing new start Ibiso David-West!
