Ophthopedia Update:Virtual implantation may predict IOL performance before surgery: A novel device for virtual IOL implantation may help ophthalmologists compare the visual performance of a monofocal IOL vs. a bifocal IOL, according to a study published in Journal of Refractive Surgery. “Virtual IOL implantation consists of the noninvasive transferring of optical imaging properties of an IOL to a patient eye without contact using an optical imaging system,” Sebastian Marx, PhD, MSc, Dipl-Ing, of Jenvis Research, and colleagues wrote. “It does this by virtually implanting the IOL at the iris plane of the patient. Thus, the patient views through the IOL as if it were #ophthalmology #eye #eyenews

Samsara Vision is pleased to announce the initiation and the first surgery of the PERSPECTIVE clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Smaller-Incision New-Generation Implantable Miniature Telescope (SING IMT®) in pseudophakic patients. On September 30, 2025, Dr. John Conrath, a leading vitreoretinal and cataract surgeon at Centre Monticelli-Paradis, Marseille, France, conducted the first procedure. In CE-referenced countries where the SING IMT® is approved for use, surgeons participating in the PERSPECTIVE study are evaluating the implantation of the SING IMT® in late-stage AMD patients who have a previously implanted intraocular lens (IOL) used in cataract surgery. PERSPECTIVE clinical trial is just one more way that Samsara Vision is helping late-stage AMD patients reconnect to the things in life that they love to see and do. Horizon Surgical Systems Completed the World’s First Robotic-Assisted Cataract Surgery Horizons Surgical Systems, a US-based cataract care service, is revolutionizing cataract surgery with robotics and AI. Recently, the company announced the completion of the world’s first cataract surgery using the Polaris™* platform. This revolutionary surgery was performed by Uday Devgan (M.D., FACS), a world-renowned Los Angeles-based cataract surgeon. This is marked as a crucial step toward a new precision standard and safety in eye surgery. “Every cataract patient deserves the same level of safety, precision, and visual outcome, but the reality is that even the best surgeons can encounter subtle inconsistencies across procedures. With Polaris, I experienced a new level of control that directly addresses those challenges. It has the potential to deliver more reliable outcomes for patients while giving surgeons the confidence that every case can be approached with greater consistency,” shared Devgan. An advanced form of LASIK eye surgery that uses a virtual 3D model of an eye to deliver more personalised treatment has been shown to achieve better visual outcomes than the SMILE Pro laser vision correction technique, according to a study. The research, presented at the recent annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, involved 60 patients who received the new technique, known as wavelight plus, in one eye, and SMILE Pro in the other. Wavelight plus uses more than 100,000 data points from each patient’s eye to create a more personalised treatment. ”We’re excited to advance the PERSPECTIVE clinical trial to generate meaningful data to inform a possible label expansion so that we can offer our sight-enhancing device to many more patients in CE referenced countries.” — Tom Ruggia, CEO and President of Samsara Vision. ICYMI, last week Samsara Vision announced the first surgery of the Smaller-Incision New-Generation Implantable Miniature Telescope (SING IMT®) in a pseudophakic patient. Dr. John Conrath, a leading vitreoretinal and cataract surgeon at Centre Monticelli-Paradis, Marseille, France conducted the surgery. In CE referenced countries (where the SING IMT® is approved) surgeons participating in the PERSPECTIVE study are evaluating the implantation of the device in late-stage AMD patients who have a previously implanted intraocular lens (IOL) used in cataract surgery. The inclusion of this population is clinically significant because this subgroup represents a large proportion of individuals affected by late-stage AMD who are not eligible for any other interventions, as Tom explains in the press release.
