French startup to test 5G in VLEO with TDF

This is pretty cool: A French startup is bringing 5G to very low Earth orbit (VLEO) - and now they’ve struck a major infrastructure deal to make it happen. CTO just announced a partnership with TDF, France’s largest neutral telecom host. Together, they’ll test how satellite-based 5G can integrate with terrestrial networks using standard cellular frequencies. Think faster comms, smaller terminals, and more resilient infrastructure - even in emergency situations where ground systems are down. The ambition? A constellation of 1,500 satellites flying just 375 km above Earth. That’s lower than Starlink - and with that comes both speed and complexity (drag, for starters). But the potential payoff is massive. Looking forward to seeing how the June test payload performs. They will have to be very cheap and light as at that VLEO, you will have to replace them every 1-3 years, depending on solar activity and surface area-to-mass ratio.

That's all we need - ANOTHER orbit, and one you can almost launch with a slingshot. 🤣 Now VLEO threatens to obsolete fledgling new business models that haven't even gotten off the ground. Satcom is the proverbial 'meat grinder'. You gotta love it!

This is inaccurate, in it's latest orbital filings (FCC) [SAT-01892] SpaceX has requested permission to lower their operational altitude of Gen2 to 345, 355 and 365km ASL respectively.

Looks like Space-X is already there at 360 Kms with 400 satellites currently orbitting the earth and another 7,100 are awaiting the final coordination with NASA under their supplemental lower altitudes coverage filing. https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-24-1193A1.pdf

At VLEO, definitely higher deltaV will be required just to stay into the orbit, Conventional thrusters like Hydrazine or Helium will be drained out soon before mission timeline. I think Electric Ion Thrusters will be viable option for long term missions as well as to gain higher deltaV. In terms of design, this seems to be going taking much space(volume), as I can see solar Array spread widely at the end(even if you fold). Efficiency and launch cost will depend on no. of satellites launched in one payload. Besides, There's one more in the market right now : The Aerospace Corporation DISKSAT. (A flat disk shaped satellite to replace Conventional design of CubeSAT).
