I had the chance to contribute to Sara Holoubek's most recent nowcasting article about the current moment in energy consumption and production. Luminary Labs sees the nowcasting series as a way to stimulate discussions on what important decisions and place big bets are needed in the present to prepare for the on the future. The piece captures the complex tradeoffs that exist and serves as a primer on the various innovative energy technologies that are poised to replace fossil fuel power generation. https://lnkd.in/e7TtJVS7

How best to ensure that there is always enough flexible generation capacity available in the electricity system to fill the growing gaps that wind and solar cannot cover? 🤔 Capacity Markets have become a recognised instrument in EU electricity market design. But what should they reward and prioritise? Cheap battery capacity that lasts only 2 hrs or also more expensive power plants that can ensure reliable power for more hours and days? And is it sufficient to pay some extra to old plants or should we incentivise investments in new capacity? Depends on what the national system really requires! Auction results have shown that e.g. wrong price caps lead to cheap solutions, but no security of supply! And paying capacity far away because it is cheaper, also does not always support the local system. Join EUGINE – The European Engine Power Plants Association for the presentation of a new study by Aurora Energy Research on the lessons learned from existing Capacity Mechanisms for the design of new schemes! 📆 4 November - ⏰ 14:00–15:00 CET - 🖥️ Online 👉 Register here: https://lnkd.in/epxQBTQc #EnergyMarkets #CapacityMarkets #ReliablePower #MarketDesign

Carlos Araque MIT ’01, SM ’02, CEO of Quaise Energy, was a panelist at this event. According to MIT News, Araque said he believes #geothermal is “metric-by-metric” more powerful and profitable than many other forms of #energy. “This is not a stop-gap,” he added. Quaise is currently developing its first power-plant-scale facility in the U.S. https://lnkd.in/e2zTjxUr

Pleased to see organic photovoltaics (OPVs) work featured in the October issue. The choice of green solvents has an influence on thin film morphology and efficiency in OPVs, as illustrated in the cover art; o-xylene (green) and chloroform (gray) solvents yield different solar energy convention efficiencies for the same recipe of donor and acceptor molecules used.
