Today, on May 9th, we celebrate more than just a date. We celebrate the fantastic blend of cultures, languages, and ideas that make the European Union so special. It is unbelievable that nations which once fought against each other for centuries now stand together, united by a shared dream of peace, prosperity, and a better future. Isn't that something beautiful? We recognise the worth and respect that every person in the world deserves. We share values like freedom in all its forms, the rule of law, equality, justice, democracy, pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, respect, solidarity and, above all, human rights. Remeber that unity is not uniformity, the EU would not be the same without the richness of its many voices. Remembering the past: 140 years ago, from 15 November 1884 to 26 February 1885, European powers gathered in Berlin at the invitation of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The colonial powers agreed on dividing up and ruling Africa among them. This conference, aimed at exploiting African labour and resources, divided Africa without a single African present. Germany’s colonial policy - as the colonial rule of other powers - was marked by injustice, violence and racism. And of course the consequences of colonial rule, and colonial continuities, still shape realities & inequalities until the present day. Although we cannot undo the colonial atrocities of the past, we can work together today to bring about a better future and to make partnerships based on mutual trust work.

🔴 Without the past, there is no future! Today is the 140th anniversary of the Berlin Conference, sadly known as the “Scramble for Africa” 😢. From November 15, 1884, to February 26, 1885, European powers and Western allies came together in Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪, to divide Africa with little regard for the continent's peoples, cultures or histories. What is most notable about the Berlin Conference is that there was no African representation whatsoever. 👉🏾 As 🇰🇪 Kenyan president William Samoei Ruto rightly pointed out during a 2023 address in Berlin, colonisation reshaped the continent’s political, social and economic structures. However, Africa is not defined by its colonial past, Ruto said, adding that we can acknowledge the past, but also look forward to building genuine partnerships ✅. In earlier addresses, 🇩🇪 Germany's Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has emphasised the importance of reflecting on the past to shape current policies. This is one of the reasons why Germany has constantly advocated for the inclusion of African countries in decision-making bodies and organisations. Minister Baerbock has acknowledged the role of the German Foreign Office's involvement in colonialism and called for research into Germany's role so it can name its injustices. Research continues to be done 👍🏾. Collaboration and redress are also practised in other forms, including memoralisation, supporting the development of former colonies and the return of artefacts. Over the course of the next few weeks, we - in collaboration with Centre Allemand d'Information en Afrique - will elaborate further on some of the work done by the 🇩🇪 Federal Foreign Office and its partners 🤝.
