Volkswagen’s warning on Wednesday about the potential impact of the China-Netherlands Nexperia dispute underscores a growing concern for global supply chains. The company flagged the possibility of production stoppages, with reports suggesting that short-time work measures may already be under discussion. Though Nexperia isn't a direct supplier, its parts are embedded within the components that Volkswagen's primary suppliers use, exposing a vulnerability in the broader supply network. This situation highlights the fragility of conventional supply chain management (#SCM) models, which are often based on outdated assumptions. Traditional SCM has been grounded in the belief that supply chains operate within stable, predictable environments, can be analyzed in isolation, and follow linear, hierarchical patterns. But today’s supply chains are anything but linear. They are dynamic, interconnected systems; interdependent yet autonomous, subject to a complex web of technological, economic, and political forces. A shift towards #ecosystem thinking offers a more accurate way to understand modern supply chains. In this paradigm, the value creation process extends beyond just suppliers and customers to include a diverse range of stakeholders such as governments, NGOs, and other peripheral actors. These players collectively shape the ecosystem. Within this model, someone must assume the role of ecosystem orchestrator. This orchestrator, whether an incumbent supply chain player or a new entrant, must align resources and stakeholders whose goals and logics often diverge. It’s about navigating complexity, aligning disparate actors, and managing both immediate and long-term objectives. Our current research looks into this very challenge. We sought to define the capabilities that an effective ecosystem orchestrator needs to master in order to manage and shape supply ecosystems successfully. The goal is to bridge the gap between established ecosystem orchestration literature and the specific demands of supply ecosystems. Through interviews with experts from leading orchestrator companies and their ecosystem partners, our study identified distinct capabilities synthesized into five overarching capability areas: community ethos, value co-creation enablement, internal ethos, internal processes/structure, and technological foundation. We’ve recently published our findings in the Journal of Business Logistics in a paper titled Dynamic and Ordinary Capabilities for Ecosystem Orchestrators—A Perspective on the Supply Ecosystem.
