At Big Data London Russell Dalgleish shared how our nation is harnessing digital innovation from smart grids to digital twins to push the boundaries of what’s possible with renewable energy. He emphasised the importance of building community and praised what has been achieved at Net Zero Nation. Scotland can now produce the equivalent of more than 100% of its daily electricity from renewables, and the lessons we’re learning are shaping global Net Zero strategies. Our team spent last week attending various NY Climate Week events as panelists, roundtable participants and interviewees, networking and meeting clients. Climate Week hosted over 1,000+ events and despite the busy schedules, the team finished the week inspired and energized. Here are some of our team’s reflections on the week: 🔹Steadier mood: Despite political shifts, support for environmental markets remains strong and real policy change has been limited. The mood and outlook overall was more positive than what we witnessed in Davos and London International Energy Week early this year. 🔹Rising demand: Data centers and broader electrification will drive huge power needs, making renewables the essential supply solution. The US supply side incentives are falling away so as demand grows, prices will have to increase, securing new investments and incentives for renewable projects. 🔹Corporate commitment: Harward Business Review research indicates continuous strong commitment to corporate decarbonization with 32% companies accelerating on their climate action while only 13% of companies are reducing their efforts. 🔹Renewables are resilient: There was solar before the IRA and there will be solar after OBBBA, with cost improvements and deployability driving competitiveness. Investments in US in renewables are even more so economics driven rather than policy driven. 🔹Security and resilience: Energy security, grid stability and local investment now lead the conversation, but the outcome is the same: more renewables, storage and climate tech. 🔹Innovation is at an all-time high: Technology and software solutions are advancing fast. AI is both a tool for efficiency and a challenge, as its energy load must be managed. Overall, we have left Climate Week with a sense that the determination across corporates, financiers and innovators is stronger than ever. The world is still very much “powering on”. As #NationalInnovationWeek comes to a close, today we’re shining a spotlight on the energy sector and its key role in Scotland’s path to net zero. At The Data Lab, we were proud to have supported the development of the Scottish Climate Intelligence Service – a groundbreaking programme that helped all 32 Scottish local authorities take evidence-based climate action. Climate tech... or energy security/resilience tech? At a time where climate is slipping down the list of priority topics in many geographies (https://lnkd.in/eZSQVq_5.), it is important to make sure that politicians and policy makers understand one fundamental fact: the energy transition brings a lot of benefits besides climate. The McKinsey & Company sustainability team just published an interesting note on this point. The authors show that climate technologies can help on energy security, energy access, emission reduction and industrial competitiveness. An economy based on fossil fuels, besides being inefficient, is one based on continuous imports of large quantities of oil, gas and coal (to a lesser extent) which are burnt and lost (to the atmosphere). An electrotech-based economy (to use the language developed in that excellent report: https://lnkd.in/eHQYCgDZ) offers the prospects of a more resilient and efficient energy system. Of course, that new system needs to be built (it is, although not fast enough) while the other needs to sunset. But the main point remains that even if not for climate, decarbonising and electrifying is the way to go... Clean Energy and the 2030 Agenda: Are We Moving Fast Enough? The UN’s 2030 Agenda set ambitious goals for Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7): affordable, reliable, and modern clean energy for all. Yet, with just 5 years left, progress is falling behind and the consequences extend far beyond climate. Key insights from a recent Nature article: Clean energy isn’t just about emissions it’s tied to public health, economic resilience, and social equity. To hit 2030 targets, the world must double energy efficiency and massively scale renewable deployment. Without urgent action, clean energy gaps will slow progress in poverty reduction, education, and even healthcare.
