The INITIATE HORIZON EUROPE PROJECT will host the Roundtable Data-Powered Business Innovation Models, as part of the joint conference Shaping the Future of Data, Knowledge and Innovation with AI for Global Sustainable Change. The conference will be held at Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa between November 27-28, 2025, under the theme of Knowledge and Data Management in the context of AI and Sustainability. The roundtable will serve as a discussion about the newly created Business Analytics & Data Science Lab, which originated from the efforts to empower higher education institutions to develop R&I through institution transformation. Advancing Data Collaboration in the Age of AI Over lunch in Auckland, Rakesh Kumar and I reflected on the growing importance of data testbeds and the role of platforms like IEEE DataPort in enabling responsible, open, and interoperable data ecosystems. In an era defined by artificial intelligence, the way we curate, connect, and contextualise data will shape how knowledge is created and shared. Data testbeds, grounded in collaboration between academia, industry, and professional networks, are becoming critical to advancing reproducible research and collective insight. Through the IEEE Data Initiative, there is increasing potential to link disciplinary and regional strengths, from environmental systems to digital innovation. During Rakesh Kumar’s visit, in his capacity as the IEEE volunteer lead for DataPort, we are leading a joint series of data science engagements between the University of Canterbury, Business Canterbury, and partner organisations. Supported by IEEE, these engagements bring together data and artificial intelligence in ways that strengthen collaboration, innovation, and the economic impact of the Canterbury region. As data analysts increasingly adopt spatial tools, the demand for intuitive, cloud-native platforms grows exponentially. I am honored to be presenting at the International Conference on Business and Technology (ICBT’Cairo2025), hosted by the Onsi Sawiris School of Business, The American University in Cairo and organized by the EuroMid Academy of Business and Technology, taking place September 29 – October 1, 2025. My presentation will introduce what I consider my most innovative research proposal so far: Synthetic Scenario Methodology (SSM): An AI-Driven Approach for Strategic Business Insights 🔹 Traditional data collection is increasingly constrained by regulation, cost, and limited access to rare but critical events. 🔹 SSM offers an alternative: structured analysis of AI-generated synthetic datasets, not as substitutes, but as primary artefacts for strategic insight. 🔹 With Business Context Blueprints (BCB), Strategic Rules Matrices (SRM), and the Human–AI Hypothetical Data Comparison Instrument (H-AI HDCI), SSM creates calibrated, auditable scenarios that move beyond single-point forecasts. 🔹 The result? A methodology that supports business leaders in anticipating shocks, mapping risks, and improving decision-making through structured scenario development. This is a step forward in how AI can reshape research methodologies and create synthetic yet reliable pathways for exploring the future of business. Today, I had the chance to attend the Big Data Conference 2025 at Linnaeus University in Kalmar, hosted by the Linnaeus University Centre for Data Intensive Sciences and Applications (DISA). The aim of the conference is to bring both new inspiration from speakers and updates on ongoing research within DISA, other universities, and industry, and it absolutely delivered on that. Two talks in particular were the highlights for me: Amilcar Soares presented a taxonomy-driven approach to exploring movement data, showing how structuring movement variables and combining them with anomaly detection can uncover meaningful patterns in high-dimensional, unlabeled datasets. It made me think about parallels with challenges in computer vision, where structuring and interpreting complex data is just as critical. Fernando V. Paulovich discussed the future of visual analytics, asking whether humans are still needed in the analytical loop in the era of generative AI. His points on balancing automation with human expertise made me reflect on the importance of keeping humans central in the process of making sense of data. For me, the biggest takeaway is how much research continues to drive progress in big data and AI. This event has sparked a stronger interest in exploring research myself as part of my career path, while continuing to deepen my expertise.
