🇪🇸 Spain, you are hurting your younger generations. 👀 Disclaimer: This is not my usual post, and if you want to avoid reading any controversial opinion you can scroll down 😊 In the last few weeks I have seen a trend growing on Linkedin: “Madrid, the next tech hub in Europe”. While this may hold true (partially), and most of us in the tech sector are enjoying great conditions (salary, benefits…etc) the rest of the country is stalling. Specially, younger generations. Where do I see this? 1️⃣ 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 in Spain grew by only 2.76% in 30 years, a performance that ranks among the worst in the OECD. This indicates a consistent struggle for Spanish workers to maintain their purchasing power. [El Mundo, 2025] 2️⃣ 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 in key cities is a major challenge. The average rent in Madrid for a one-bedroom apartment is around €1,370 per month, while the average monthly salary is about €2,350. For most people this is +50% of their salary in rental expenses, are you kidding me? [Caixabank Research, 2025] 3️⃣ Would like to 𝐁𝐮𝐲 𝐚 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞? Big no! In 2000, the average home in Spain required around 5.5 years of a full salary to buy. In 2024? Number is up to 9.3 years (bear in mind salaries have only grown by 2.76%). Also, new home? Pay that 10% tax rate on new homes purchase, compared to UK, no tax is paid on properties up to £425,000. 4️⃣ Our politicians have 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. 25-35 years-old workers make on average €1,948 gross per month. In contrast, the pension for a retiree is around €1650 per month. [HousingAnywhere, 2025; INE, 2024] 5️⃣ 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, companies in Spain pay almost double the OECD average for each worker, the cost of a new job becomes a steep climb, not a welcoming path. 23.3% on avg in Spain, vs 13.1% in the rest of the OCDE. [PwC Tax Summaries, 2025] These 5 points affect directly our younger generations, and comes to show how our politicians have not had a long term vision for the last 30 years. Happy to read you guys in the comments 😊 #spain #españa

That is one opinion, but inconsistently based. Just a few comments: point 1 shows masked data due to the underground economy. Just observe growth, purchasing power, consumption rate & PIB evolution. Points 2&3 are the consequences of the negative and absence of investment in public homes for renting of purchase from autonomous governments (the competence & tasks on habitacional issues depend directly on them) because of political ideology that defends & priorities neoliberal policies by promoting business with investors & foreign Gold Visa granters that extensively speculate with houses, while intervening & manipulating artificially both the market & prices (rent & purchase). Last but not least (4&5), old people must receive what they paid in the form of retirement taxes during their work time. These 'salaries' kept many families alive during the economical crisis 15-10 years ago (too young to remember??). Moreover, as a fifth part of the population, they are a powerful engine in terms of spend and consumption. Concerning young people's salaries, remember that they depend entirely on the private enterprise (incomes, benefits & investment in human force & resources) & also on your formation, experience & value. No other actuators.

Things are equally bad here in Barcelona, and as someone who lived the first half of my career in the UK, where the expectation was that you aim to pay a third of your salary on your rent, I was shocked to find myself age 37 on a net salary of €1,100 per month with the lowest non-subsidised rents available where I lived of €800 (for a small box studio, before electricity etc). The only option was to return to living like a student in a house share situation in a flat with non-market rents arranged between some private landlords and our language school. Yes, salaries for extra-curricular teachers are particularly bad because we’re not paid for necessary preparation time, so it’s almost impossible to work “full time”, but anyone who works within our convenio has the same battle, and it’s a convenio that covers a huge proportion of service workers. What I’m trying to highlight is that it’s always worth looking at the actual figures at the bottom end, not the averages (although I appreciate you probably don’t have that data). The average wage is likely skewed by the highest salaries being much higher, but people on those salaries won’t be looking to live in one-bed flats, which is your comparative housing.

Parece que leyera argentina hace unos años. El votar socialismo tiene su precio. El poder de la población es el voto, hay que votar por quien trabaja para el beneficio de su propio pueblo. Gracias por la información y tu punto de vista!

in a representative democracy a leader that has a long term vision, looses the elections. Aging society will make decisions in favor of retirees, because they are many.

It is up to business owners and managers to set wages. Just look at how much they complained whenever the minimum wage was increased. Bizarrely enough, the head of the business organisation has seen his salary go up by over £100,000 in a five-year period. Renting is in private hands, but because it is too expensive, do you want politicians to intervene in the market? The same applies to house prices. The same politicians you decry have almost doubled the SMI in the last seven years, increased employment and improved workers' rights. Are policies really decimating hiring? Employment has increased and unemployment has decreased. Spain has one of the fastest-growing economies.

I don't think your opinion is controversial, it simply reflects the reality, of not only Spain, but other countries as well - especially the Southern European ones. While I'd say some the costs of living in Spain (groceries, bills, etc) are very reasonable, the housing crisis is out of control and the vast majority of the people are struggling.

I have just taken on my first employer. Literally one third of the cost is tax and social security and the employee gets 2/3rds. It is a big commitment especially with my own costs and social security. I was willing to take punt and give a young person a better long-term job than working in hospitality. Private pensions and more tax-efficient savings vehicles need to be put in place for their future. To be honest the UK is not much better with the state pension triple lock at the expense of the youth. Same situation in Southern Europe throughout.
