🎣 New gear developed at Arizona State University in Jesse Senko's lab is helping fishers in North Carolina continue their way of life—by saving the lives of vulnerable sea turtles. 🗞️ Because sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act, commercial fishers in these waters face restrictions if they can't collect their catch sustainably. 🟢 Enter Senko, an Assistant Professor in the ASU School of Ocean Futures and a Schmidt Marine Technology Partners grantee. He and his team found that attaching green LED lights to gillnets can reduce the accidental capture of sea turtles and other threatened species, as ASU News reports. Plus, the low-cost solution puts adoption of the gear within reach. 👓 Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/giQh4uWa

"Studies have shown that lighted nets can reduce bycatch of sea turtles and sharks, but the idea has faced many hurdles to adoption. The batteries are short-lived, expensive to replace and raise disposal concerns. The lights are too heavy and prone to snagging nets. Fishers find them difficult to work with. To get past these hurdles, researchers at Arizona State University collaborated with a team of coastal gillnet fishers to develop solar-powered lights that function as buoys, like any others threaded onto the float line of a fishing net. The LED lights flash on and off to conserve energy and can stay active for over five days with no sunlight." To view or add a comment, sign in

This acknowledgment highlights the Caribbean’s growing leadership in ocean-based solutions and reinforces the importance of continued investment in resilient coastal infrastructure, fisheries, and ocean governance. For Grenada, it strengthens the case for targeted initiatives such as the development of a dedicated fishing port to serve the long-line fleet, aligned with national objectives for sustainable fisheries management and economic diversification under the blue economy framework. Regional progress of this nature demonstrates the value of shared learning and coordinated action across the OECS and wider Caribbean as we work toward sustainable ocean stewardship. https://lnkd.in/gXsW-knT #BlueEconomy #Oceans #SustainableDevelopment #Caribbean #Fisheries #EarthshotPrize #Grenada #RegionalCooperation To view or add a comment, sign in

In 2023 we installed shellfish reefs – made up of baskets holding 18kg of oyster shells, ready to host oyster spat and other shellfish species – to trial their ability to filter nutrients in the Pine River in City of Moreton Bay. It is a first-of-its-kind trial for Australia that we’re delivering in partnership with University of the Sunshine Coast, OzFish Unlimited and Healthy Land & Water, and nearly two years in, Associate Professor Ben Gilby and the team of marine experts have measured encouraging results. Our commitment to #NetZero includes an ambitious goal of ensuring all nutrients from wastewater are diverted or offset from waterways by 2040 and this is one of the innovative nature-based solutions we are trialling to bring us closer to this target. We’re excited to continue the trial and continue exploring nature-based environmental projects that boost performance and drive lasting improvements for the community. See the results in our story: https://lnkd.in/gqNc2ESq #NatureBasedSolutions #NetZeroNutrients #Innovation #Unitywater #MoretonBay To view or add a comment, sign in

We just wrapped up the world’s largest oyster restoration project! It all started in 2014—back when we were all doing the ice bucket challenge, eating avocado toast, and watching the Sochi Olympics. We joined forces with Chesapeake Bay Program, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and Baltimore District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to restore oyster reef habitat in 10 tributaries by the end of 2025. It was an ambitious goal, especially given the time frame. Since we like to be a little extra, we ended up adding another tributary in Virginia, and still managed to finish early. All told, we actively restored 1,900 acres of oyster reef habitat, and planted roughly 7.5 billion oysters! So what are the benefits of this restoration? Oyster reefs help the blue crab population grow, because crabs can survive predators better on reefs than sandy bottom habitats. Oysters help clean the Bay, filtering pollutants out of the water. And restored reefs also boost the economy. Our work isn’t done—we’re monitoring our progress so far, and we’ll continue bolstering oysters for habitat restoration, aquaculture, and the wild fishery. https://lnkd.in/e69uV469 Photo credit: Chesapeake Bay Foundation To view or add a comment, sign in

For many Wisconsin lake and pond owners, the ultimate goal is creating a fishery that consistently produces trophy-class largemouth bass. Achieving that outcome, however, takes more than luck — it requires science, strategy, and long-term management. At Wisconsin Lake & Pond Resource, our fisheries biologists bring deep expertise in designing and maintaining lakes that support thriving, healthy bass populations. In our latest blog, we break down how careful planning and proven management practices can transform a lake into a sustainable trophy bass fishery.
