💭 What is the #rebound effect in remote work? 🌿 It’s when the environmental #savings from working remotely — like reduced commuting and office #energy use — are partly or fully offset by new energy demands and behaviors 📈 Remote workers often use more energy at home, invest in extra equipment, or make more non-work trips (the “time rebound effect”) since #errands can no longer be combined with commuting. No commute, flexible hours. • Then, slowly, I noticed something: my energy was waning. • It wasn't obvious at first, but my productivity hit a speed bump. I remembered Steve Jobs' fascination with calligraphy—paying attention to the seemingly small details made the difference. Here are some small changes to consider: • Optimize Your Workspace: Optimize, don't clutter. - Choose ergonomic furniture; it’s an investment in your health. - Lighting matters—natural light boosts mood and productivity. • Define a Routine: Consistency counts. - Start and end work at consistent times to simulate a 'traditional' workday. - Set daily goals to maintain focus. - This structure provides balance and prevents burnout. • Mind Your Well-being: The lifeblood of sustained productivity. - Scheduling lunch breaks, stepping away from screens. - Exercise, meditate, or just nap—do what refreshes you. • Communication is Key: Isolation is the enemy. - Use technology to stay visible and engaged with your team. - Micro manage? Post-pandemic, the rise and promise of remote work felt like a truly positive shift. I, like many, envisioned a future with more global job opportunities, breaking down geographical barriers and diverse and senior roles outside the traditional hubs of North America. Now, as the market tightens and job availability shrinks, it's becoming clear that this vision of truly global, accessible remote work hasn't fully materialized. Even in regions embracing flexibility, like Europe, the trend leans heavily towards "hybrid" models still tethered to an employer's physical base rather than true "work-from-anywhere" roles. In recent times as I look into new opportunities this has irked me. I'll be honest: I wished things would look different by now. Despite all the proven productivity gains, it feels like we're still not valuing one of the biggest benefits: the immense time and energy saved by eliminating the daily commute. That time is a direct boost to productivity and well-being.
