Station every 200km from 2030 Two new hydrogen refuelling stations are set to be built in Italy by the middle of 2026, adding a small but meaningful boost to the country’s early hydrogen mobility network. The project, announced by Denmark-based Cavendish Hydrogen, will supply the equipment for what it described as “an Italian customer with a leading position in the fuel and transport services sector.” Constructed by the end of 2026 Construction and commissioning are expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2026, after which the sites will enter service under a two-year maintenance agreement. It will take Cavendish’s Italian presence to three locations in total - hardly a flood, but a sign that the groundwork for hydrogen mobility in southern Europe is slowly taking shape. Italy’s network remains limited, with only a handful of public stations currently open, though the government’s national recovery plan sets aside around €3.6 billion for hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructure over the coming years. “Cavendish continues to strengthen its position as a trusted partner in hydrogen mobility solutions across Europe,” said CEO Robert Borin.

GHD Secures US Patent for Integrated #Hydrogen Fueling, #EV Fast Charging and Backup Power Forecourt--Global engineering and advisory firm GHD has been granted a US patent for its multi-functional hydrogen and electric forecourt system — a first-of-its-kind design that integrates hydrogen dispensers for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) with a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) #fuelcell stack, supplying both DC fast charging for EVs and stationary backup power. The patented configuration delivers a shared-energy model that enhances both project feasibility and operational economics by allowing one site to serve multiple clean mobility and energy applications. Key innovations include: 1️⃣ Multi-Functional Integration — Seamless delivery of hydrogen refueling, EV charging, and critical backup power. 2️⃣ Versatility and Cost Efficiency — The addition of PEM fuel cells improves forecourt profitability by enabling multiple revenue streams. 3️⃣ Energy Storage Capability — Stored hydrogen provides power resilience during grid outages, supporting emergency and critical-use EV fleets. “Providing this innovative approach to real world applications has resonated with several clients that we have offered the use of the patent to, and we expect to see project rollouts coming to market,” said Fred Taylor, patent co-author and Hydrogen Lead for the Americas. “Our approach not only caters to and promotes multiple markets but also presents opportunities for product line development and portfolio station services.” GHD’s design addresses one of hydrogen’s biggest challenges — forecourt economics. With limited FCV adoption in most markets, single-use hydrogen stations struggle to reach commercial viability. The company’s patented system bridges this gap by integrating EV charging and backup power, ensuring higher asset utilization while positioning hydrogen as part of a multi-energy transition pathway. The patent also encompasses on-site electrolysis for hydrogen generation, tackling scaling mismatches between early-stage hydrogen demand and standard large-scale electrolyzers. The concept enables smaller, modular installations that evolve alongside FCV fleet growth, reducing unit costs and improving system efficiency. With operations across five continents and 4,500 professionals in the Americas alone, GHD is leveraging its patent to support client projects in mobility, utilities, and critical infrastructure, creating what could become the model for future hybrid hydrogen-electric forecourts. The concern expressed in a recent joint letter is that without urgent action, the UK risks over-reliance on battery-electric solutions, which could lead to significant grid constraints, rare earth dependency, reduced fleet productivity, and loss of competitiveness to international markets already scaling hydrogen deployment. The Hydrogen Energy Association and its partners have offered to convene a cross-sector taskforce with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Department for Transport to present case studies, international examples, and investment requirements. A full report of findings will be published later this year.
The Hydrogen Energy Association (HEA), in partnership with the Road Haulage Association (RHA) and the CPA - Construction Plant-hire Association, has called on the UK Government to act swiftly to ensure options are kept open for hydrogen’s role in decarbonising the nation’s heavy transport sector. In a joint letter sent to government ahead of the forthcoming refresh of the UK Hydrogen Strategy, the three organisations highlighted hydrogen’s potential to play a critical role in delivering a practical and affordable pathway to net zero for high-utilisation and hard-to-electrify land transport applications – including HGVs, long-distance coaches, utility vans, construction plant, emergency service fleets, and parts of the rail sector. In their recommendations, the HEA, RHA, and CPA have called on government to: ✅ Recognise hydrogen’s economic and strategic value for energy security, industrial growth, and decarbonisation ✅ Publish a national roadmap for hydrogen fuel and refuelling infrastructure Introduce hydrogen demand targets ✅ Create mechanisms to bridge the early cost gap between hydrogen fuel and diesel ✅ Ensure all hydrogen transport solutions, including internal combustion engine hydrogen, are supported under the ZEV mandate and other net zero policies Dr. Emma Guthrie, CEO of the HEA, said: “Hydrogen is not just an energy solution – it is an economic opportunity. With the right policy support, the UK can decarbonise heavy transport without compromising productivity, while also creating jobs, strengthening energy security, and positioning itself as a global leader in hydrogen technology.” Richard James Smith, Managing Director, RHA, said: “HGV and coach operators face a challenging pathway to decarbonise their fleets. As the market for zero emission vehicle technologies develops to meet the UK’s Net Zero targets, it is essential that all technology options remain on the table, including hydrogen and the use of low carbon fuels."
