AI in Action: Revolutionizing Primary Education in Bangladesh with AI 🌟 In Bangladesh, where primary schools face resource constraints and large classrooms, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) conducted a groundbreaking study to explore how AI can transform teaching and learning for millions of students. AI tools for personalized learning, adaptive content, chat bots for feedback, and automated curriculum support like generating quizzes, lesson plans, and multimedia resources in Bangla. This helps with assessments, tracking student performance, and aiding special needs education. Implementation steps will start with comprehensive training programs and workshops to build teacher skills. Invest in infrastructure upgrades like reliable internet and devices across 513 upazilas. Develop culturally adapted AI tools integrated into the national curriculum. Establish policies for data privacy and ethics based on UNESCO frameworks. Engage stakeholders including parents and policymakers for sustainable rollout. Key Outcomes: A survey of 1,253 primary teachers revealed 93.7% agree AI benefits education, with 64.9% expressing positive sentiments in NLP analysis. Post-training, 95% of participants showed improved perceptions and higher competency scores. AI was seen as highly receptive for tasks like lesson planning (76.97%) and question creation (77.55%), potentially saving time on material preparation (42.83% of responses highlighted this). This points to enhanced efficiency and personalized learning in resource-limited settings. But study says, limited infrastructure like unreliable internet (affecting 74.9% of teachers), power outages, and lack of devices in rural areas. Teachers also grapple with knowledge gaps, data privacy concerns, ethical issues such as AI bias, and the need for Bangla-language tools, all while managing emotional tasks that require human touch. Singapore among global leaders in teachers’ use of AI in education According to the OECD TALIS 2024 report, teachers’ usage of artificial intelligence varies tremendously across countries. In Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, around 75% of teachers reported using AI in their teaching practice which is the highest rates among all participating systems. What’s even more significant is that “Teachers in these systems are also most likely to have received professional learning in using AI, highlighting how strategic investment in training directly shapes classroom innovation.” This data reinforces an important lesson for education leaders and policymakers: - It’s not just about adopting AI, it’s about equipping teachers to use it effectively and ethically. - As AI continues to reshape pedagogy, assessment and learning design, the real differentiator will be teacher readiness and institutional support, not just technology availability. Saudi Arabia has launched a nationwide AI curriculum for all public school students in the 2025–2026 academic year. More than six million students will now be introduced to artificial intelligence through lessons developed by the Ministry of Education, the SDAIA, and other national bodies. The aim is to build AI knowledge early - not just technical skills, but awareness of how AI is shaping work, society, and decision-making. The curriculum also includes guidance on the ethical use of generative AI in classrooms. This initiative forms part of a broader national strategy. Alongside school programmes, Saudi Arabia is also investing in: Local and international training for teachers University scholarships for AI and data science A national framework for AI qualifications aligned with global standards These efforts reflect a long-term investment in talent - and in ensuring that AI becomes a strength of the local workforce, not just a tool imported from elsewhere. The Changing Role of the Human Teacher in the Age of AI   Many conversations about AI in education imagine an adversarial future where machines “take” teacher jobs. Most of us believe that AI is determined to take over our jobs as teachers, considering the competence AI has demonstrated in some of our routine work like grading, content delivery, or lesson planning. The increasing capabilities of Artificial Intelligence are not a threat to the core mission of education, but a catalyst accelerating the long-overdue evolution of the human teacher's role. It is becoming unequivocally clear that the future of instruction hinges less on the transmission of content and more on the cultivation of human capacity. Tomorrow’s teacher will be the one who can: ✅ Make learning meaningful – helping students see why what they’re learning matters in real life. When students understand the purpose, they stay motivated and curious. (As John Hattie reminds us, clarity and relevance have some of the biggest effects on learning.) ✅ Guide students step by step – just as Vygotsky described in his “zone of proximal development,” effective teachers know how to stretch students a little beyond what they can do alone not too easy, not too hard. ✅ Make mastery look simple – by breaking complex skills into doable steps, giving feedback, and celebrating small wins. Great teachers don’t just teach content; they teach confidence. ✅ Model human qualities – empathy, creativity, judgment, teamwork, and ethics. These are the things AI can’t copy, but every learner will need in real life. ✅ Keep learning – building both subject knowledge and teaching wisdom (what Shulman called “pedagogical content knowledge”). The more we understand how students learn our subject, the more valuable we become. The world’s major education bodies, like the OECD and UNESCO, agree that the teacher’s role is evolving from “knowledge giver” to “learning designer, coach, and mentor.” So, the question isn’t “Will AI replace teachers?” It is rather “Which teachers will grow with AI and which ones will be left behind?” Teachers who focus on relevance, relationships, and real human connection will not only survive but thrive.
