💧 Hydropower: the forgotten giant of the energy world Dr Fatih Birol, President of the International Energy Agency (IEA), recently highlighted how hydropower remains the third-largest source of global electricity generation, yet often receives far less attention than it deserves. In his article, Birol notes that hydropower offers huge potential to provide flexibility and on-demand energy storage, with pumped-storage hydropower (PSH) currently delivering 30× more storage capacity than all chemical batteries combined. While he calls for hydropower to be moved up the global energy agenda, it’s clear that innovation and scaling will be essential to meet growing demand. At RheEnergise, our High-Density Hydro solution is designed to do just that: unlocking hundreds of thousands of new, lower-cost PSH sites worldwide and helping hydropower realise its full potential in the clean energy transition. Hydropower currently supplies more than 50 % of all renewable electricity worldwide. This form of energy provides more than megawatts: it adds resilience, flexibility, and strength to the energy transition. But projects often struggle with head loss, hard-to-reach sites, rapid material deterioration, or abrasive waters. ➡️ Click on the video to see how Amiblu helps hydropower projects overcome these pain points and and run smarter, longer, and more efficiently!

💧 Hydropower: The Forgotten Giant of Clean Energy Hydropower quietly remains the third-largest source of electricity worldwide, generating nearly 14% of global power last year - as much as wind and solar combined. Yet, despite its scale and reliability, it rarely gets the spotlight in today’s energy discussions. As we move deeper into the age of electrification, hydropower stands out for its unique flexibility - it can quickly ramp generation up or down to balance the grid and support greater renewable integration. It’s also the world’s largest form of electricity storage. Pumped-storage hydro plants today can hold 30 times more power than all grid batteries combined, making them an unsung hero for system stability. However, there’s a flip side: - In many advanced economies, hydropower plants are ageing, demanding urgent refurbishments to sustain performance. - In emerging economies, nearly 60% of hydropower potential remains untapped, representing a massive opportunity to expand electricity access and accelerate industrial growth. To unlock this potential, we need: ✅ Modernisation of ageing assets ✅ Streamlined permitting processes ✅ Enhanced financing and policy support ✅ Strong sustainability and resilience standards With these focused actions, hydropower can continue to be a cornerstone of secure, affordable, and sustainable electricity for decades to come. It’s time to bring this forgotten giant back into the clean energy conversation. #Hydropower #CleanEnergy #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #ClimateAction #Electricity #GreenGrowth

GLOBAL HYDROPOWER DAY 2025 Today, October 11, is a day to celebrate the role of hydropower as a vital, clean energy source that provides sustainable electricity, helps manage water resources, and supports communities worldwide. It's an opportunity to recognize the hydropower industry's contributions to a net-zero future and its important role alongside other renewable energy sources like solar and wind. • Sustainable energy: Hydropower is the oldest form of renewable energy and provides reliable electricity to millions of homes and businesses. It can also be used to store energy from intermittent sources like wind and solar. • Community and economic benefits: Beyond electricity, hydropower projects create jobs, support regional economies, and provide flood control and water supply benefits for local populations. • Global impact: The day highlights the importance of hydropower both globally and locally, with organizations like the International Hydropower Association (IHA) and the National Hydropower Association (NHA) leading celebrations and sharing success stories. • Innovation: The industry is constantly innovating with new technologies like tidal and wave power, and by improving existing facilities to increase efficiency and capacity. This Year's Theme, "Energy Synergy: Connecting Generation, Infrastructure, and Consumption for a Sustainable Future," emphasizes the importance of seamless integration across the energy ecosystem. Check out our article on Liv Randi Hultgreen of RenewHydro making hydro's future in Norway and beyond from our October issue. In a country where more than 90 percent of the electric energy comes from hydropower, where does the potential for further development lie? Liv Randi Hultgreen, the executive director of RenewHydro, the Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU) (Norwegian Research Centre for Renewal of Hydropower), talks with Hydro Leader about that question. The center, which is partly funded by the industry and the Norwegian Research Council, is focusing on how to develop and operate aging hydropower plants more flexibly so they can better support intermittent renewables. Ms. Hultgreen also talks about Norway’s vast reservoir storage capacity, the country’s potential to sell power to other European nations, and the center’s ongoingcollaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy. https://bit.ly/4owNCX2 #HydroLeader #Hydropower #Hydro #Hydroelectricity #RenewHydro
