5G Advanced is the next evolution of 5G and represents a major step between today’s 5G networks and the future 6G standard. 3GPP’s work on #6G is progressing through Release 20, which began in mid-2025 to study foundational 6G technologies, with formal standardization planned for Release 21 by 2029 and commercial 6G deployments expected after 2030, according to a #whitepaper authored by ABI Research.

5G rollout is widespread, with more than half the world’s population now covered by 5G. The technology continues to evolve to ensure it remains at the cutting edge of the mobile industry. We are currently at 3GPP Release 18, which marks the official start of the 5G Advanced era, featuring significant enhancements to the 5G system established in previous releases (15, 16, and 17). Release 18 will continue to evolve through subsequent releases and serves as a bridge toward the future of the 6G system. China is doubling down on the Direct-to-device space. Last week I posted about how the UK's OFCOM authorised the use of D2D spectrum bands, well it seems China is going the same way. Not only have they provided a license to China Unicom (one of China's three telecoms leaders) to operate D2D satellite connectivity, their technology ministry explicitly stated support for D2D services in a new report. This report promotes collaborations between telecommunications giants and satellite operators, to try and enable new business types and develop the market as a whole. They're also looking to do all this while aligning to typical standards such as 3GPP, which will open up more potential for international collaboration. With China's large land mass meaning full cell coverage is tricky, this could be a great move in the right direction for them. #d2d #directtodevice
