Imagen to 3D Model using AI - Am I automating myself out of a job? Because of my 3D modelling skills, I can create anything from precise technical CAD models to stunning visualisations. The latter, a task that could take hours of meticulous sculpting from photos, can now be done in minutes with AI. I recorded the process (link in comments) and it left me with a crucial question: Does sharing this technique validate my craft by pushing boundaries, or does it make my traditional skills obsolete? The raw AI output isn't perfect. It still needs a skilled hand for refinement. But it proves that for commercial work, the mantra is shifting: faster is cheaper, and often, better. I believe this is just the beginning. Technical drafting will be next. All the data needed is in the drawings; an AI could easily generate 3D models, dimensions, and sections. It's not a matter of if, but when. So what do we do? We adapt. We shift from focusing on the repetitive process to mastering the final outcome, using AI as our most powerful tool. Want to start your journey with Embodied AI, but don't know how? I will tell you about two paths you can take. 1. Buy a cheap robot arm. SO-101 arm will be a good start. You can parchase it from Wowrobo (China) or Seedstudio (warehouse in Germany) - first one is cheaper, but you need to add delivery and customs expenses, so prices become comparable. If you have 3D printer you can buy only the servos and electronics and print the parts yourself - they are all open-source. However, I personally don't recommend that option - price of servos is 90% of arm cost, so you'll not save much money but waste a lot of time on printing. Once you have it - collect your datset and train VLA model like SmolVLA. LeRobot library has lot of tutorials and prebuilt scripts allow you to start fast and go through the process easily. Hovewer, you may not want to invest in buying robotic arm while you don't know yet if the embodied AI is the right field for you. Here option 2 come into the play - more complicated, but doesn't require any purchases. 2. Start with simulation. There is plenty of different robotic simulator available: Maniskill, Webots, Mojoco (most importantly - avoid ROS). Just use a robot in a simulation envinronment. Collect a dataset within the sim, train your model and watch how it performs in simulator. Why did I say that way is more complicated? Well, LeRobot has no good suport by default for a simulation envinronments. You'll need to get your hands dirty and figure out how to make your sim work with Lerobot models. Despite second way taking more time, it will allow you to understand how does VLA models work much better - you working directly with model inputs/outputs here, not running prebuilt Lerobot scripts. Actually, in one of next post I'll share which simulator to choose in your case and which one I choosen persanally.
