Global Network Initiative’s Post

📢 The Global Network Initiative (GNI) has released a statement ahead of the upcoming signing ceremony for the UN “Hanoi” Convention Against Cybercrime. We remain deeply concerned about the Convention’s implications for human rights. Its provisions risk enabling: 👁️ Extraterritorial surveillance of human rights defenders, 🧑💻 Harassment of tech company employees, and 💻 Compromises to systems protecting user privacy and security. Over the past 10 months, these concerns have only intensified as states continue to misuse cybercrime laws, expand surveillance, and undermine encryption. We urge rights-respecting governments not to sign or ratify the Convention. Instead, they should work with civil society and private sector actors to push for stronger safeguards and resist further expansion of scope. 📄 Read our full statement here: https://lnkd.in/e_gh4wWA
